Salisbury defense stifles No. 6 Cabrini in top-10 showdown

Box Score

RADNOR, Pa. – The battle of two top-10 teams lived up to the billing as No. 1 Salisbury University downed No. 6 Cabrini University, 13-5, on Wednesday night at Edit Robb Dixon Field.

The Sea Gulls (10-0) were led by the defensive unit, which weathered the early storm to force 17 Cabrini turnovers, causing five, and limiting the home team to an 11-of-16 mark on clears.

The unit was anchored by junior goalie Brandon Warren, who finished the night with 11 saves, marking his fourth double-digit save performance of the season. Meanwhile, Kevin Murphy recorded a team-best three caused turnovers and four groundballs, while Brad Greik added a caused turnover and scooped up three groundballs of his own.

The Cavaliers (7-2) jumped to an early 2-0 lead netting back-to-back goals in the opening eight minutes of the game but would only find the net three more times in the contest.

Early in the second quarter with the maroon and gold clinging to a one goal lead, compliments of Tyler Snyder's lone marker of the evening, the defensive unit mounted a stand that saw them turn aside four straight Cabrini possessions, including two man-down penalties, to kill a total of two minutes and a shot clock violation. Warren capped the defensive stand notching his fifth save of the first half.

A Cabrini goal midway through the third quarter saw the lead get trimmed to two, 6-4, but the Sea Gulls regained the momentum when Cross Ferrara and Brett Malamphy netted back-to-back goals in a nine-second span to push the advantage to 8-4 and effectively close out the game.

Josh Melton finished the game as the tream's leading scorer, netting four goals and tallying six points while Ferrara recorded his fifth hat trick of the season.

Salisbury returns to action on Saturday, March 30 when it opens Capital Athletic Conference play on the road at the University of Mary Washington. Faceoff is set for 1 p.m.
