Salisbury defeats No. 3 Mary Washington, 11-7, in CAC opener

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 4 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team opened Capital Athletic Conference play with an 11-7 victory over No. 3 University of Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon.

After heading to halftime tied 7-7, the Sea Gulls (9-2, 1-0 CAC) shut out the Eagles (9-2, 0-1 CAC) in the second half to win the match-up between the two top-five teams.

The two teams battled back and forth in the first half, as neither team was able to take more than a two-goal lead in the opening frame.

Lindsey Wagner had a hand in the first three goals for Salisbury, as she assisted on goals by Gabby Mongno and Gianna Demato to start the game and then notched a goal of her own off an assist from Taylor Poore to make it 3-3.

Demato then tallied her second of the game midway through the first half before Mary Washington tied the game 4-4.

Courtney Fegan and Lydia McNulty registered back-to-back goals to give the Sea Gulls a two-point advantage, but the Eagles rattled off three straight goals to take a 7-6 lead.

Poore was able to find the back of the net with just 20 seconds remaining in the first half to even the score 7-7.

The second half was all Salisbury, as the maroon and gold outscored Mary Washington 4-0 in the frame. Mongno scored the first two to give herself a hat trick, while Emma Skoglund and Alexis Strobel each tallied their first goal of the game.

The Salisbury defense held the Eagles to just five shots in the second half, including only two on goal. Skye Graham made five saves in net to earn the victory.

Holly Bowers, Martha Hutzell, Kendall Bannan, and Poore all recorded two caused turnovers to help lead the defensive charge.

Salisbury is back in action on Saturday, April 6 as the team hosts Frostburg State University at 12 p.m.
