Baseball team defeats visiting Knights

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 17 Salisbury University baseball team defeated Neumann University on Thursday afternoon at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium, 7-2.

Salisbury (6-3-1) struck first, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the second inning. With runners on the corners and no one out, Will Gutekunst successfully laid down a sacrifice squeeze bunt to bring home Scott Cameron from third base. With two outs and runners again stationed on the corners, Brandon Bonesteel grounded to third base, but a throwing error allowed Jack Decker to advance home to give the Sea Gulls the 2-0 lead.

The maroon and gold doubled its lead an inning later when Cameron Hyder finished a two-out, bases loaded at-bat by sending a single into left field to score Gutekunst and Cameron.

The Knights (5-7) cut into their deficit in the top of the fourth inning. The first run advanced home from third base on a groundout to first. A second run scored two at-bats later on a sacrifice fly to center field, sending home the baserunner stationed on third base to make it 4-2 Salisbury.

Salisbury increased its lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning, including a bases-loaded single through the right side of the infield by Jack Barry, and an RBI single into center field by Cameron.

Andrew Rosso replaced starter Zach Amisano in the seventh inning and closed out the contest by allowing only one hit across the final three frames to earn the save.

Amisano recorded his second straight win, pitching six innings while striking out three batters and allowing two runs on four hits.

The team will take to the road for the first time this season when it travels to Johns Hopkins University on Sunday, March 10. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
