Softball splits with TCNJ on Saturday

Box Score 1

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 17 Salisbury University softball team split a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Sea Gull Softball Stadium against The College of New Jersey, earning a 4-3 win in the opener before falling 9-1 in the second game.

Game 1: Salisbury 4, TCNJ 3

The College of New Jersey used one hit and took advantage of a pair of walks to score one in the top of the first, but the 1-0 lead was short lived.

Salisbury answered in the bottom of the first. Dakotah Fraley started the frame with a double and two walks loaded the bases before a sacrifice fly by Emily Allen tied the game. A run-scoring single by Kaleigh Edwards brought Jillian Jones home for the 2-1 lead and the Sea Gulls never trailed again.

Jones, Salisbury's starting pitcher in the game, allowed just one hit over her 4 1/3 innings to pick up the victory.

Salisbury saw its run total double in the third inning when Edwards drilled the first pitch she saw for a two-run home run – her second of the season – for a 4-1 lead.

The Lions were able to get one run back in the fifth inning, and scored one off reliever Shannon Powell in the seventh before the Sea Gulls closed out the game, giving Powell her first save of the year.

Game 2: TCNJ 9, Salisbury 1 (5 inn.)

Salisbury was able to get on the board first in the second game of the day, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning on a line drive solo home run off the bat of Amelia Trotter.

The 1-0 lead held into the third inning, but The College of New Jersey (2-2) drew even with a single run in the third and was able to score five times in the fourth and three more in the fifth to end the game.

Four different Sea Gulls had hits in the game.

The Lions will play a doubleheader at Sea Gull Softball Stadium on Sunday, March 10, taking on the University of Lynchburg beginning at noon. Salisbury will battle Lynchburg on Monday, March 11, beginning at 1 p.m.
