Second-half surge leads women's lacrosse past Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The No. 5 Salisbury University women's lacrosse team used a second-half outburst to defeat Christopher Newport University, 18-8, on Wednesday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Captains (7-8, 1-3 CAC) took a 3-2 lead with 13:39 remaining in the first half, but the Sea Gulls (11-2, 3-0 CAC) went on a 3-0 run to go up 5-3 and take the lead for good. Christopher Newport ended the run with just under three minutes to go in the half before Emma Skoglund scored her first of three goals to give the maroon and gold a 6-4 lead heading into halftime.

Christopher Newport got within one once again at the start of the second half, but Salisbury rattled off four straight goals to go ahead 10-5. Alexis Strobel, who recorded her second straight seven-point performance, started the run with her second goal of the game and assisted on the next two to Lindsey Wagner. Gianna Demato, who joined Skoglund with a hat trick, capped off the 4-0 run.

Salisbury outscored the Captains 8-3 the rest of the way, including runs of 3-0 and 4-0. Gabby Mongno made it three Sea Gulls with a hat trick, while Delaney Hill notched her first career goal to give the maroon and gold 10 different goal scorers.

Holly Bowers led the defensive effort by causing a team-high four turnovers and coming up with four groundballs, helping keep the opponent to single digits in goals for the fourth straight game.

Salisbury returns home to face No. 16 The College of New Jersey on Saturday, April 13 at 2 p.m.
