Baseball picks up win over Penn State-Abington

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 12 Salisbury University baseball team defeated visiting Penn State University-Abington at Sea Gull Baseball Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, 9-1.

Penn State-Abington (15-13) struck first in the top of the first inning on a two-out RBI-single up the middle by left fielder Joe Rizzo to grab an early 1-0 lead.

Salisbury (25-6-1) answered in the bottom of the second inning when Jack Barry scored from third base on a Jay Perry groundout, bringing the score even at 1-1.

The Sea Gulls added runs in the fourth and fifth innings on a Jimmy Adkins single through the left side of the infield and a Brad Haas RBI groundout to take a 3-1 lead.

The maroon and gold scored five more runs in the sixth inning to open things up. The inning began with a routine fly out to center field, but then Perry and Will Gutekunst both reached base in the following two plate appearances before advancing on a throwing error by the catcher. Jimmy Monaghan entered the game as a pinch hitter and quickly drove both runners home with a single into right field. Cameron Hyder drove in two more runs on a triple down the right field line a few at-bats later. The final run of the inning came when Haas reached first safely on an RBI fielder's choice, allowing Hyder to score from third base to make it 8-1.

Perry capped off the scoring on the afternoon in the seventh inning with a sacrifice fly into left field to make it a 9-1 lead.

On the mound, the Sea Gulls used a committee approach as Daniel Frake, Andrew Rosso, Jason McDonough, Robbie Hollenbeck, and Matt Grogan combined to scatter six hits and strike out 10 batters. Rosso (1-1) earned his first win of the season, pitching 1 2/3 innings in relief while surrendering only one hit and one walk with two strikeouts.

The team will take to the road to face off against Neumann University on Wednesday, April 17 beginning at 3:30 p.m.
