Baseball earns road win over Neumann

Box Score

ASTON, Pa. – The No. 12 Salisbury University baseball team traveled north to take on Neumann University on Wednesday afternoon and came away with the victory over the Knights, 11-7.

Salisbury (26-6-1) exploded offensively in the top of the first inning, driving home six runs. Jay Perry led the charge with a two-run single through the left side of the infield, while Jack Barry and Will Gutekunst each recorded an RBI.

Neumann (12-17) battled back, cutting into its deficit with four runs in the second inning before tying the game at six apiece with two more runs in the third.

The Sea Gulls bounced back, adding four runs of their own in the fourth inning. Cameron Hyder kicked things off with a sacrifice bunt to advance Brandon Bonesteel to third base, but a throwing error on the Knights allowed him to complete his trip around the bases. Brad Haas also added an RBI double down the right field line, while Jimmy Adkins drove home two runs with a single into left field for the 10-6 advantage.

The Knights scored a run in the eighth inning to pull within three, but the maroon and gold matched with a run of its own in the ninth inning to secure the 11-7 victory.

Corey Burton (1-1) collected his first win of the season in relief, pitching the final 7 1/3 innings of the contest. The freshman surrendered 10 hits, but worked effectively to minimize the damage by allowing only two earned runs and striking out six batters he faced.

The team returns to action on Friday, April 19 when it travels to Capital Athletic Conference opponent St. Mary's College of Maryland to kick off a three-game weekend series against the Seahawks beginning at 3:45 p.m.
