Salisbury downs St. Mary's in regular season finale

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The third ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team closed out its 2019 regular season on Wednesday afternoon with an 18-6 victory over St. Mary's College of Maryland in Capital Athletic Conference play.

Both Pierre Armstrong and Cross Ferrara finished the game with a team-best five points, while each player also finished the afternoon tied for the lead in goals with three.

Ferrara helped get the offense going early, firing home two of his three tallies in the opening frame to help give the Sea Gulls (16-1, 5-1 CAC) a 5-2 advantage after the first 15 minutes. Ferrara's first marker of the day helped spark a 4-1 Salisbury run to close out the first quarter as he netted both the first and final marker.

The Sea Gulls' offense continued to roll in the second half as Armstrong opened the final 30 minutes of action netting three straight markers to start a 6-1 Salisbury quarter. Armstrong opened the quarter with an unassisted effort before finishing off feeds from both Josh Melton, who finished his afternoon with three assists, and Ferrara to push the lead to 11-2.

The Seahawks (10-7, 3-3 CAC) managed to stop the scoring run with their first goal since the 1:55 mark of the first quarter to make it an 11-3 score line. However, three more goals, including one from Ferrara, capped the third quarter scoring and gave the maroon and gold a 14-3 lead heading into the final 15 minutes of action.

T.J. Ellis pushed his starting record to 2-0 with a solid performance in net, surrendering just three goals while tallying seven saves. Brad Greik and Brad Apgar finished the game with three caused turnovers each while Kevin Murphy scooped up a defensive-best six groundballs.

With the win Salisbury secured the No. 2 seed in the CAC Tournament and will host the seventh seed, Southern Virginia University, on Saturday, April 27 at a time to be determined.
