Sea Gulls top Knights in rain-shortened opener

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 10 Salisbury University baseball team opened a three-game series against Capital Athletic Conference opponent Southern Virginia University and, following a two-hour weather delay, came away with the 6-3 victory.

Southern Virginia (14-13, 5-10 CAC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a Bridger Taylor two-run home run to left field with two outs.

Salisbury (30-6-1, 17-2 CAC) cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the second inning when Jimmy Adkins sent a pitch deep enough to right field for Brad Haas to tag up and score from third base to make it 2-1.

A two out RBI single by Jordan Nase pushed the Knights' lead to 3-1, but with the weather beginning to look ominous, the Sea Gulls buckled down to score the next five.

The rally began in the bottom of the fourth inning with a Will Gutekunst RBI double, making it 3-2. Matt Padeway then opened the bottom of the fifth inning with a walk before advancing from first to third on a passed ball during Cameron Hyder's turn at the plate. Hyder finished his at-bat with a ground out the second that scored Padeway from third to tie the game at 3-3.

Justin Meekins scored on a Jimmy Monaghan single up the middle to give the maroon and gold its first lead of the afternoon.

The game was then halted for a brief rain delay. Play resumed 10 minutes later and began with Jack Barry drawing a walk. Monaghan scored while Barry advanced to third on a passed ball two at-bats later. The final run of the game came with Barry scoring on a throwing error by the Knights' catcher.

The contest was then forced into a lightning delay with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Following a mix of lightning and rain totaling nearly two hours, the game was eventually called and Salisbury was awarded the victory.

Jason McDonough picked up the win with one inning of work. He struck out two of the three batters he faced, allowing no hits or runs.

The team returns to action on Saturday, April 27 when it completes its series against the Knights with a doubleheader set to kick of at 12 p.m. The team's seniors will be recognized prior to first pitch as part of Senior Day festivities.
