NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University softball team saw its run in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament come to a close on Saturday afternoon at Christopher Newport University, falling in its games to Frostburg State University and the host Captains.

Frostburg St. 10, Salisbury 9

In an offensive slugfest, it was the fifth-seeded Bobcats that had the last laugh, winning in walk-off fashion in Salisbury's first game of the day.

With Salisbury down a run in the top of the seventh, 9-8, the Sea Gulls were able to put together a rally and tie the contest. Emily Allen started things by reaching on a one-out error before Francesca Cuttitta came on as a pinch runner. A sacrifice bunt moved the tying run into scoring position before senior Cat Ramagnano doubled to left field, evening the score at 9-9.

But Frostburg State was able to get the winning run around in the bottom of the seventh, getting two hits, including the run-scoring single by Kat Treff with two outs to win the game.

Freshman Hope Eckhart, who came on in relief in the sixth inning, and work 1 2/3 innings, took the loss in her first collegiate appearance.

After falling behind 2-1 in the game, the Sea Gulls rallied, scoring a run in the third – on a Kaleigh Edwards single – and six times in the fourth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by senior Amelia Trotter and a two-run double by Madeira Alexander.

But the Bobcats (17-19) answered with four runs in the fourth inning off starter Shannon Powell, and three more in the fifth against reliever Alexis Layton to take the late lead.

Christopher Newport 10, Salisbury 2 (6 inn.)

The second-seeded Captains were able to take the early lead against Salisbury (24-13) in the final game of the day, and never relinquished their advantage.

Patty Maye Ohanian drove in the first run of the game in the top of the first, with Christopher Newport playing as the visiting team, off Eckhart.

The Captains (30-6) pushed four runs across in the top of the second off Eckhart and Powell, who came on in relief in the inning, opening up a 5-0 lead.

Salisbury got its first run of the game in the bottom of the third on a solo home run by Ramagnano to center field – her first of the year.

The Captains scored three times in the fifth for an 8-1 lead before Salisbury brought home its final run of the game in the home half of the inning on a two-out error by the Captains, allowing Allen to score. But Christopher Newport was able to push two more across in the sixth for a 10-2 lead, ending the contest after six innings.

Ramagnano led the Salisbury offense on the day with four hits over the two games while Edwards had three hits.
