Baseball finishes sweep of Knights; clinches top tournament seed

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 10 Salisbury University baseball team completed a sweep of Southern Virginia University on Saturday afternoon, winning both sides of doubleheader by scores of 14-9 and 7-2.

Game 1: Salisbury 14, Southern Virginia 9

The first game of the day kicked off with a Salisbury run in the bottom of the first inning. Cameron Hyder, who led off the inning with a bunt single, eventually came around to score on a Jimmy Monaghan ground out to the right side of the infield for the early 1-0 lead.

The next few innings flew along until the Sea Gulls began to run into trouble in the top of the fifth. Southern Virginia's Ryan Morin kicked off the inning with a solo shot to right field. Then with two outs in the inning, starting pitcher Jimmy Adkins surrendered four straight hits – including a three-run shot to right field by Southern Virginia's Bridger Taylor – that led to five more runs and a 6-1 Knights lead.

The Sea Gulls rallied back in the bottom of the inning to score three runs. It began when Hyder took a pitch to the shoulder with the bases loaded and no outs, scoring Will Gutekunst on the play. A Justin Meekins bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the next at-bat scored Tyler Mayo from third. The final run of the frame came with another bases-loaded walk – this time to Brad Haas – to score Brandon Bonesteel.

Salisbury seemed poised to keep the runs coming, but a close play on an infield grounder on which Adkins was called on a bang-bang play ended the rally.

The Knights quickly got three runs back again in the top of the sixth on a Jordan Nase home run to extend their lead to 9-4.

The Sea Gulls weren't bothered by the five-run deficit, however, scoring six more of their own in the sixth inning, including two hits, a walk, a fielder's choice, a groundout and a balk for a 10-9 lead.

The maroon and gold extended its lead to 14-9 a couple of innings later by adding four more runs, including a Haas two-run single up the middle, and Adkins sacrifice fly, and a wild pitch.

Robbie Hollenbeck picked up his first win as a Sea Gull, needing to pitch only two-thirds of an inning in relief before the offense went on its tear.

Game 2: Salisbury 7, Southern Virginia 2

Southern Virginia (14-15, 5-12 CAC) scored first in game two, as Cole Critchfield sent a two-run blast over the right field fence in the top of the first inning for the early 2-0 lead.

Salisbury (33-6-1, 19-2 CAC) answered back in the bottom of the second inning with a Hyder two-run single and an Jay Perry RBI single for the 3-2 lead.

Hyder drove in another run in the fourth inning, while Adkins and Perry combined to drive in another three in the fifth inning to take a 7-2 lead that would hold the rest of the way.

Xavier Marmol (8-1) continued to show his dominance on the mound, picking up his third consecutive win. The freshman southpaw tossed 7 1/3 innings, striking out eight total batters and allowing only four hits and two earned runs.

With today's victories and a Christopher Newport University loss to York College of Pennsylvania, the Sea Gulls clinch the top seed in this year's Capital Athletic Conference tournament set to kick off next weekend. The team will host a three-team opening weekend pod set to begin on Friday, May 3, beginning at 9 a.m. Check www.suseagulls.com for more information on the teams heading to Sea Gull Baseball Stadium, as it becomes available.
