FREDERICKSBURG, Va. — The Salisbury University softball team earned a Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader split at the University of Mary Washington on Wednesday afternoon, claiming the first game, 10-1 in six innings, before dropping the nightcap, 3-1.

Game 1: Salisbury 10, Mary Washington 1 (6 inn.)

The Sea Gulls pounded out 17 hits in six innings, scoring eight times in the first three innings to take control.

Junior Emily Allen got the scoring started with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning and Amelia Trotter added a third run, driving in Kaleigh Edwards with a two-out double.

Jillian Jones drove in a run in the second inning before sophomore Madeira Alexander drilled a three-run home run for a 7-0 lead and a Jones flyout brought home a run for an 8-0 lead in the third.

Mary Washington kept the game going, scoring once in the bottom of the fourth – the only run they brought home against starting pitcher Shannon Powell – but the Sea Gulls put up two more runs in the sixth to end the game early.

Powell went the distance, allowing just seven hits and a walk while striking out four to earn the win.

Allen, Edwards, and Dakotah Fraley each had three hits in the game while Alexander, Trotter, and Cat Ramagnano had a pair.

Game 2: Mary Washington 3, Salisbury 1

Salisbury (15-8, 3-1 CAC) scored first in the second game, when Fraley opened the contest with a solo home run. It turned out to be one of just six hits in the game for Salisbury.

The Eagles (13-12, 3-1 CAC) scored single runs in the second, third, and fourth innings, coming up with just six hits of their own against Alexis Layton and Powell. Layton worked three-plus innings, giving up three hits and the three Mary Washington runs, while striking out two.

Powell worked the final three innings, also giving up three hits, keeping Mary Washington off the scoreboard.

Salisbury was unable to get a runner into scoring position after Fraley's shot until they were faced with two outs in the top of the seventh inning, putting runners on second and third after a pair of singles and a wild pitch, but Mary Washington pitcher Juliet Truslow got a flyout to finish off her complete-game victory.

The Sea Gulls remain on the road for CAC play on Saturday, April 6 at York College of Pennsylania. The first pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m.
