Fegan, Strobel lead women's lacrosse past Christopher Newport in CAC semifinals

SALISBURY, Md. – The top-seeded Salisbury University women's lacrosse team advanced to the Capital Athletic Conference championship with a 22-11 victory over fifth-seeded Christopher Newport University in the semifinals on Wednesday afternoon.

Courtney Fegan and Alexis Strobel led the way offensively, as Fegan tallied a team-high six goals and Strobel recorded three goals and five assists for a team-high eight points. Strobel topped 100 points for her career on the day while moving into sixth place in program history in single-season assists and ninth place in career assists.

Salisbury (16-2) jumped out to a 7-2 lead midway through the first half on goals by six different players, but the Captains (9-10) scored three straight to climb within two with 8:51 remaining.  

Gabby Mongno helped the Sea Gulls go on a 4-0 run of their own with two goals, while the maroon and gold outscored Christopher Newport 6-1 the rest of the half to take a 13-6 lead into the break. Mongno, who finished with four goals, and Fegan combined for five of the six markers, with four coming on assists from Strobel. Taylor Poore, who recorded the other goal during the 6-1 run, notched two goals in the first half to go along with a team-high three caused turnovers in the game.

The Captains were unable to get closer than seven goals in the second half as Salisbury outscored them 9-5 in the frame.

Fegan recorded three of her six goals in the second half, while Strobel tallied two of her goals in the opening minutes. Lydia McNulty dished out three assists to aid in the second half effort. 

Salisbury will host second-seeded York College of Pennsylvania in the CAC championship on Saturday, May 4 at a time to be determined.
