Softball wins in extras at York to earn CAC doubleheader split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

YORK, Pa. – The Salisbury University softball team split its Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader at York College of Pennsylvania on Saturday, falling in the opener before winning the second in extra innings.

Game 1: York 3, Salisbury 2

What started as a pitchers' duel ended with an offensive flurry in the closing two innings.

Salisbury starting pitcher Shannon Powell and York starter Hannah Vogt brought the game into the sixth inning with no score. Only twice did runners reach third base in the first five innings with the Sea Gulls nearly taking a one-run lead in the fourth. Madeira Alexander was hit by a pitch with one out and raced around the bases on Kaleigh Edwards' double to left field, but Alexander was thrown out trying to score.

It turned out to be Edwards who did break the scoreless tie in the top of the sixth, drilling a solo home run to left field for a 1-0 lead. After Kendall Dixon singled with two outs, Alissa Saverino sent a double to center field, allowing Dixon to score for a 2-0 edge.

The Spartans were able to get to Powell for five of its seven hits against her in the game in the seventh inning, scoring three times to take the win.

Game 2: Salisbury 7, York 5 (8 inn.)

The teams got the scoring started earlier in the second game with Salisbury (16-9, 4-2 CAC) scoring one unearned run in the second when Edwards was able to come home on a York (16-12, 3-3 CAC) error.

The Spartans scored three times in the bottom of the third – two of which were unearned – to grab a lead they would hold until the fifth.

Salisbury cut into the 3-1 deficit in the fourth, on another Saverino run-scoring single, and the Sea Gulls pulled ahead on a two-run home run by Alexander in the fifth inning.

Another unearned run by York tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, 4-4. Salisbury put runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh, unable to push the go-ahead run home, but scored three times in the top of the eight. Dakotah Fraley sent a double to center, scoring Cat Ramagnano to take the lead and RBI by Emily Allen and Edwards pushed the lead to 7-4.

York scored once in the bottom of the eighth, but was unable to draw even.

Salisbury had 12 hits in the game, led by three from Edwards and two each by Fraley, Alexander, Amelia Trotter.

The Sea Gulls will be back in action on Sunday, April 7, hosting Stevenson University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m., at Sea Gull Softball Stadium.
