Softball battles for doubleheader sweep of Stevenson

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep against visiting Stevenson University on Sunday at Sea Gull Softball Stadium, claiming the opener in six innings before battling from behind three times in the second game for the sweep.

Game 1: Salisbury 9, Stevenson 1 (6 inn.)

After the Mustangs scored the opening game's first run in the top of the first inning, Dakotah Fraley tied it up in the bottom of the third inning, sending a line drive down the left field line, over the fence for a solo home run and a 1-1 score.

The run in the first was all the Mustangs were able to get against Salisbury starting pitcher Shannon Powell, who went the distance, giving up six hitswhile striking out four.

Salisbury made Powell a winner when then bats came to life for seven hits resulting in five runs in the bottom of the fifth, for a 6-1 lead. The damage was done with five different run-scoring plays, with RBI singles by Madeira Alexander, Amelia Trotter, Kendall Dixon, and Alissa Saverino.

After Powell retired the side in order in the top of the sixth, Salisbury ended the game early, getting a walk and a hit before Trotter belted her second home run of the year – a three-run shot – to put the Sea Gulls ahead by eight runs, ending the game.

Game 2: Salisbury 9, Stevenson 6

The Mustangs (9-14) were able to strike first in the second game, as well, getting two runs on three hits against starter Jillian Jones in the second.

Salisbury (18-9) answered quickly in the bottom of the second inning. Kaleigh Edwards opened the frame with a triple to right field and scored on the next pitch when Trotter ripped a single over the third base bag.

Three consecutive hits loaded the bases before Cat Ramagnano hit into a fielder's choice, scoring Trotter and tying the game at 2-2.

The Mustangs put up three more runs in the top of the third, on three hits, to take a 5-2 lead and driving Jones from the game bringing Powell in for the relief appearance.

The offensive back and forth continued in the bottom of the fourth, with Ramganano drilling a two-run triple to right-center field before scoring on Fraley's bloop into left, tying the game, 5-5, but Stevenson was able to score once again in the fifth inning.

Salisbury overcame its third deficit of the day on Dixon run-scoring single to tie, and a groundout by Saverino sending home the go-ahead run.

Powell picked up her second win of the day, and 12th win of the season, giving up just one run on five hits over five innings.

Salisbury had 16 hits in the game led by three from Edwards while Jones, Trotter, Dixon, Saverino, and Ramagnano each had two. The bottom five spots in the Salisbury order combined to go 11-for-17 in the game.

The Sea Gulls play their final non-conference games of the regular season on Tuesday, April 9 with a doubleheader at Catholic University of America, beginning at 2 p.m.
