Late blasts from Fraley, Jones help softball to sweep at Catholic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Salisbury University softball team picked up a pair of wins in the team's final non-conference doubleheader of the regular season, winning twice at Catholic University of America on Tuesday using late heroics in the nightcap to finish off the sweep.

Game 1: Salisbury 6, Catholic 1

The Sea Gulls scored in each of the first four innings to open up a 5-0 lead through four innings of play.

Dakotah Fraley started the game with a single and later scored on a double by Madeira Alexander.

Amelia Trotter was responsible for Salisbury's run in the second inning, leading off the frame with a single before advancing to third on a pair of groundouts before scoring on a passed ball.

The only crooked number in the first game came in the top of the third when Trotter doubled to left field, scoring Alexander and Kaleigh Edwards, before a Jillian Jones single in the fourth made it 5-0.

The Cardinals scored once in the sixth before Alexander belted her sixth home run of the year – all coming in the past 11 games.

Senior Shannon Powell earned the win, going the distance, allowing just six hits, walking none and striking out a pair for her 13th victory of the year.

Game 2: Salisbury 6, Catholic 5

After Salisbury (20-9) scored two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run double by Edwards, it turned out to be the Cardinals (13-15) who would take the lead through the early innings.

Catholic scored a run in the first and got three more in the second. Powell came on in relief to end the second inning, leaving the bases loaded with Cardinals, but gave up a run in the third, as Salisbury found itself in a 5-2 hole.

The score held there until Salisbury struck again in the top of the sixth inning to take the lead. With one out, Salisbury got a walk and a single to put two on for Fraley. The junior drilled a 1-and-1 pitch for a three-run home run, tying the game. It marked the first runs surrendered by Catholic starter Claire Sturek since the first inning and ended her day.

Jones came up and turned around the first pitch from reliever Allie Lajeunesse for a solo home run and a Salisbury 6-5 lead.

Powell made the lead hold up, allowing three runners on base in the closing two innings, but the potential tying run never reached third base.

Salisbury is back into Capital Athletic Conference play for the rest of the regular season, next traveling to Frostburg State University on Sunday, April 14 for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
