Women's lacrosse falls to York in CAC championship

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. – The top-seeded Salisbury University women's lacrosse team fell to second-seeded York College of Pennsylvania, 13-11, in the Capital Athletic Conference championship on Saturday afternoon.

Alexis Strobel got the Sea Gulls (16-3) on the board just 47 seconds into the game on a wrap-around goal, but the Spartans (15-5) scored the next two to take the lead.

After nearly 13 minutes of game action without a goal for Salisbury, Gabby Mongno beat her defender to the right side and punched one in to tie the game, 2-2.

York rattled off three straight goals to go ahead 5-2 before Taylor Poore notched the first of her team-high four goals on the day on a free position shot. The Spartans got one back to push their advantage back to three, 6-3, heading into halftime.

The Sea Gulls came out strong in the second half, scoring five of the first six goals to take an 8-7 lead. Lindsey Wagner tallied three unassisted markers, while Poore scored the other two to give Salisbury its first lead since the score was 1-0.

The Spartans quickly regained the lead with two straight goals, but Strobel found a cutting Gianna Demato, who bounced in a one-timer to tie the game, 9-9.

York then capitalized on a free position shot midway through the second half, starting another 3-0 run and taking the lead for good.

Poore, who also recorded a team-high three caused turnovers in the game, pulled the Sea Gulls within two with 4:41 remaining, but the Spartans responded just 34 seconds later. Demato gave Salisbury a chance with her second goal of the game with 2:15 to play, though the maroon and gold were unable to convert on two shot opportunities with under a minute to go.

Salisbury will wait to see if it has earned an at-large bid for the 2019 NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Tournament, which will be announced during the selection show on Sunday, May 5 at 9:30 p.m.
