Women's basketball unable to overcome late scoring surge in loss to Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team battled Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) rival Mary Washington on the road Wednesday night, but a late scoring surge by the hosts doomed the Sea Gulls as they fell to the Eagles, 72-63.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Mary Washington's Emily Thompson put her team ahead 9-6 in the early going on a three-pointer with 5:30 to play in the first quarter.
  • However, an 8-3 Salisbury run which began with back-to-back layups by Kaylee Otlowski and finished with an Amber Onyekwere layup at the buzzer handed the Sea Gulls a 14-12 lead through the opening 10 minutes.
  • The Eagles stole back the lead to begin the second quarter with an 8-4 run that was capped by a Faith St. Clair jumper with 4:57 remaining in the half for a 20-18 lead.
  • The Sea Gulls matched with a 7-4 run in the final minutes that featured back-to-back three-pointers by Kolby Brown and Dalina Julien to take a 25-24 edge into halftime.
  • Mary Washington tied the game with 6:10 remaining in the third quarter on another Thompson three-pointer, knotting the game at 34-34.
  • The maroon and gold finished out the quarter with a strong 15-8 run highlighted by a Kylie Webb three-pointer with 57 seconds left on the clock to take a 49-44 lead into the final frame.
  • The Eagles bounced back with a 6-0 scoring run in the first 90 seconds of the fourth quarter to re-take the lead at 50-49.
  • Salisbury kept the game close as three-pointers by Julien and Lauren Fortescue held the deficit to only one at 61-60 with 4:04 to play. However, the Eagles caught fire in the closing minutes with an 11-3 run that sealed the Mary Washington victory, 72-63.

GAME NOTES

  • Emily Dilger led the scoring for the Sea Gulls, tallying 14 points while adding four rebounds and an assist.
  • Lauren Fortescue notched 12 points while dishing out a team-high five assists and five rebounds.
  • Kaylee Otlowski matched Fortescue's five rebounds while adding nine points and a pair of blocks.
  • Mary Washington made the most from its trips to the free throw line, going 24-for-30 (80.0%) while Salisbury went 11-for-16 (68.8%)
  • The Eagles also edged the Sea Gulls from the field, shooting 50.0 percent while holding Salisbury to 43.4 percent on the night.
