Strobel, Skoglund and Talbert net hat tricks in season-opening win over Stevenson

OWINGS MILLS, Md.- The third-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team opened the 2020 season on Saturday.with a dominating 14-2 win over the Stevenson Mustangs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Stevenson was first to get on the scoreboard when Carly Bowes saw a cutting Caroline Murphy in the middle of the eight-meter. Murphy was able to finish the shot past Salisbury's Skye Graham in the seventh minute
  • Salisbury responded to Stevenson's opening tally with a 14-goal run starting with junior Julie Talbert getting the Sea Gulls and her first goal of the season. Fellow junior Alexis Strobel was working with the ball behind the goal and found Talbert open in the eight-meter and she buried her shot to tie the game in the ninth minute.
  • Junior Lydia McNulty scored only a minute after Talbert by pushing the ball in transition. McNulty's first shot rebounded off the Stevenson goalkeeper, Mack Ferguson, but she was able to retrieve her own rebound and sneak the ball past Ferguson.
  • Junior Emma Skoglund was the next Sea Gull to score, but this time coming from behind the goal. Skoglund made one move past her defender and was able to bury her low to high shot to extend the Sea Gull lead 3-1 in the 11th minute.
  • Strobel would add her first goal of the day with an upper 90 shot to extend the Salisbury lead to 4-1. This would lead to a change in goalies for Stevenson with Sam McGuire in the net.
  • Talbert would add her second of the day on a free-position goal in the 14th minute to push the Salisbury lead to 5-1.
  • Strobel and Talbert would then score the next two goals unassisted before freshman Erin Scannell scored her first career goal in a man-up opportunity off an assist from Strobel in the games 20th minute.
  • McNulty and Scannell netted their second goals of the game before the halftime horn to give the Sea Gulls a 10-1 lead over the Mustangs at halftime.
  • After the break, Salisbury would continue their goal streak with a Skoglund goal off a feed from McNulty a minute into the second half to make the score 11-1.
  • Strobel finished off her hat trick in the 35th minute on an unassisted goal.
  • In the 48th minute, Skoglund completed her hat trick off an assist from Lily Cavallaro.
  • Demato would end the scoring for the Sea Gulls with nine minutes remaining in the game with a high shot off the crossbar to give Salisbury the 14-1 lead.
  • Stevenson scored the last goal of the game on a free-position by Murphy in the last five minutes of the game.

GAME NOTES

  • Salisbury had the 34-4-shot advantage over Stevenson.
  • Salisbury's defense had a strong showing, forcing 23 Stevenson turnovers. The Sea Gulls also had the 15-10 edge in ground balls over the Mustangs.
  • Skye Graham made two saves on three shots.
  • Julie Talbert and Alexis Strobel each netted a hat trick in the win.
  • Erin Scannell, Lydia McNulty and Emma Skoglund secured two goals apiece.
  • Salisbury won 11 draws compared to Stevenson's seven draw controls.
