Home runs, pitching push No. 9 baseball past Oswego State

SALISBURY, Md. – The No. 9 Salisbury University baseball team returned home on Sunday afternoon, defeating the visiting Oswego State Lakers, 6-1, behind strong pitching and a pair of home runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Starting pitchers Braden Stinar (2-0) and Nick DeMarco (0-2) worked quickly through the first 3 1/2 innings, limiting their opponents to a combined seven singles and no runs.
  • It all changed in the bottom of the fourth inning. After forcing a routine fly-out to begin the inning, DeMarco served up a pitch to Jimmy Monaghan who abruptly sent the ball over the right field fence and out of the stadium to give Salisbury a 1-0 lead.
  • After the Lakers evened the score at 1-1 in the top half of the fifth inning, Brandon Bonesteel led off the bottom half with a solo shot of his own over the right field fence, putting the Sea Gulls back on top, 2-1.
  • A Justin Meekins single and a Stephen Rice double down the left field line kicked off the bottom of the sixth inning for Salisbury before Monaghan added two more runs on a single up the middle of the infield to push the lead to 4-1. Jimmy
  • Jimmy Adkins tacked on one more run for the Sea Gulls before the inning ended with an RBI single and a 5-1 lead.
  • A one-out sacrifice fly by Christian Murphy in the eighth inning extended Salisbury to a 6-1 lead that it would hold for the victory.

GAME NOTES

  • Braden Stinar (2-0) picked up the victory, tossing seven full innings while striking out a pair of hitters and allowing only one earned run to score.
  • Jimmy Monaghan and Brandon Bonesteel each smashed solo home runs in the win. It was Monaghan's first long-ball of the year while Bonesteel picked up his second of the season. Monaghan also added two more RBI on a single to lead the team with three total on the afternoon.
  • Justin Meekins (2-for-4), Stephen Rice (2-for-3), and Christian Murphy (2-for-3) all had multi-hit games as well for the Sea Gulls.
