Men's Basketball falls in thriller at St. Mary's

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – A back-and-forth thriller between two conference rivals went against the Salisbury University men's basketball team as the St. Mary's Seahawks prevailed with a 62-60 win on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • St. Mary's charged the early goings of the game before the maroon and gold tied the game at 12-12 at the 14:11 mark in the first half on a Paul Garcia three.
  • The two teams battled back-and-forth throughout the half with the lead changed three times and tied twice.
  • Salisbury went on an 8-0 run in the final two minutes to take a 39-30 lead over St. Mary's into the halftime break. The half ended with back-to-back threes by Jordan Oates and Gary Briddell.
  • St. Mary's looked to close the deficit in the second half with a 22-9 run to take a 52-50 lead when Daryn Alexander hit a three at the 8:45 mark.
  • Salisbury fought back to tie the game a fourth time when Garcia knocked down a pair of free throws to nod the game at 57 with just over 4:30 left in regulation.
  • SU took a one-point lead, 60-59, when Garcia found a cutting Jasiah Perry under the basket at 2:54 to go in regulation.
  • Micah Henry put St. Mary's ahead, 61-60, with a jumper at the free-throw line. with under two minutes left in the game.
  • Needing the foul in the final stages, SU sent Henry to the free-throw line with four seconds left. Henry split the one-and-one to give SU a chance to tie or win the game with seconds on the clock.
  • After an inbounding violation by Salisbury, St. Mary's turned the ball over on an errant pass on the ensuing possession to give Salisbury another chance to tie or win.
  • On the final possession, Oates had a chance to win the game with a 35-foot three-point attempt but it fell just short of the rim to allow St. Mary's to escape with the 62-60 win.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Four players reached double figures for Salisbury. Jasiah Perry led the charge with 19 points, shooting 9-of-12 from the field. Perry also reeled in four rebounds.
  • Gary Briddell registered 14 points, five steals and two blocks.
  • Jordan Oates earned 11 points and pulled down eight rebounds. 
  • Paul Garcia collected 10 points on 3-of-4 shooting and 2-of-2 from the three.
  • Fierstein pulled down a season-best 12 rebounds and dished out a game-best six assists.
  • Salisbury outrebounded St. Mary's, 43-36.

ST. MARY'S GAME NOTES

  • Gary Grant led all scorers with 23 points for St. Mary's. Grant also added nine rebounds and a steal.
  • Micah Henry (14) and Daryn Alexander (11) also reached double-digit points for St. Mary's.
  • St. Mary's shot better from the field (43.4-35.8) than Salisbury.
