McNulty paces No. 5 women's lacrosse over No. 25 St. Mary's

SALISBURY, Md.- The fifth-ranked Salisbury women's lacrosse team opened Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) play with a 14-10 home victory over the No. 25 St. Mary's (Md.) Seahawks on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Salisbury started the game hot with a six-goal run to take the early lead over St. Mary's. During the run, McNulty registered a hat trick in the first 15 minutes of the game. 

  • The Seahawks got their first goal on the board with a Lucy Gussio goal with 14:42 remaining in the first half. 

  • Alexis Strobel and Camryn Pepper tallied within two minutes each other to extend the SU lead, 8-1.

  • St. Mary's scored three unanswered goals to cut the Sea Gull lead in half, 8-4, with goals coming from Erin Carmody, Jayne Barkman, and Gussio.

  • Delaney Hill added her name to the scoring column to end the Seahawks' three-goal run with 6:12 remaining in the half. 

  • McNulty tallied her fourth goal of the day on a free-position to round out the scoring in the first half with a Salisbury lead, 10-4.

  • The teams traded goals throughout the first 15 minutes of the second half. Strobel assisted Pepper and McNulty for Salisbury's first two goals of the second half. Strobel added an unassisted goal with 13:36 left in the game to give SU a 13-7 lead.
  • The Seahawks went on a two-goal run to bring the score within three, 10-7, with goals from Lily Davison and Gussio

  • Scannell tallied the last Sea Gull goal of the day with 8:22 left on the clock to extend the lead, 14-9.

  • With less than two minutes remaining in the game, Davison tallied her third of the game to lessen the Sea Gull lead to four, 14-10.

  • The Salisbury defense clamped down on St. Mary's to take the C2C win.
     

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Lydia McNulty scored a game-high five goals on nine shots.

  • Alexis Strobel dished out a team-high three assists.

  • Erin Scannell, Camryn Pepper, and Strobel all tallied a pair of goals.

  • Carrie Hesen led the defense with three caused turnovers and four ground balls. Hesen also collected a team-high six draw controls

  • Mary Claire Hisle recorded five saves in net for the Sea Gulls

  • Salisbury edged St. Mary's 16-13 in ground balls


ST. MARY'S GAME NOTES 

  • Lucy Gussio and Lily Davison both tallied three-goals for the Seahawks 

  • Jayne Barkman and Kelly Emge collected a team-high four draw controls

  • Stephanie Heffron paced the defense with two caused turnovers

  • Francesca Ziccardi picked up a team-high five groundballs

  • St. Mary's earned the advantage in draw controls, 13-12.

UP NEXT

  • Salisbury will be back in action on Wednesday, March 17 to face C2C opponent No. 14 Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va. 

  • The top-15 matchup is set to begin at 4 p.m.
