No. 5 Softball blanks Lynchburg in doubleheader sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

SALISBURY, Md. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University softball team completed the three-day sweep of the annual home tournament with a pair of shutouts over the Lynchburg Hornets on Monday. Salisbury opened the doubleheader with a 1-0 pitcher-duel victory and wrapped the day with a 5-0 win in the weekend finale over Lynchburg.

BOX SCORES (GAME 1 / GAME 2)

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1

  • Both teams combined for six hits in Game 1.
  • Salisbury got two-out magic in the bottom of the fourth inning. Maddison Lednum reached base on a single through the left side of the infield before Lauren Meyers brought her home on a double to left-center field for the only run of the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2

  • It didn't take as long in the nightcap for Salisbury to get a run across. Abby Mace led off the game with a single to center field. Meghan Reed followed with a sacrifice bunt that Mace scored all the way from first base as Lynchburg threw the ball away trying to get Mace out at third base.
  • Lynchburg got a runner in scoring position in the second inning but Lindsey Windsor worked out of the jam with a 1-6-3 groundout to end the threat.
  • Lednum led off the bottom of the third with a single to right field. After a sacrifice bunt by Meyers, Natalie Paoli roped a double to the right-center gap to score BK Hewitt to double-up the SU lead.
  • Lynchburg made a pitching change after the Paoli RBI and Madeira Alexander took Kaleigh Hackett's first pitch over the center-field fence with a two-run bomb to put Salisbury up 4-0 after three innings.
  • The Hornets got two runners in scoring position with one out in the fourth inning but Windsor forced back-to-back groundouts to end the inning unscathed.
  • Salisbury added insurance in the sixth inning with an RBI triple to center field by Lednum to plate Raegan Smith to push the SU advantage up to 5-0.
  • Alyssa Taylor replaced Windsor with an out in the seventh and shut down the Hornets with a strikeout and a lineout.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Savannah Sheats pitched a two-hut shutout in the opener. She struck out nine Hornets to tie a career-high. Sheats faced only two batters over the minimum.
  • Lindsey Windsor and Alyssa Taylor teamed up to four-hit Lynchburg in Game 2. Windsor struck out three and scattered three hits in 6.1 innings. Taylor finished up the game allowing only a hit and a walk with a strikeout.
  • Kaleigh Edwards, Maddison Lednum and Natalie Paoli each totaled three hits in the doubleheader. Paoli notched two doubles on the day. Lednum hit her first triple of the season.
  • Madeira Alexander ripped her first home run of the season with the two-run shot in Game Two.
