Pair of seven-goal runs lift No. 2 Women's Lacrosse over CNU, 17-10

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - A pair of seven-goal runs propelled the second-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team to a 19-11 victory over Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) rival, No. 20 Christopher Newport, to push the win streak to double digits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • CNU took the early 2-0 lead with goals from Zoe Dyer and Kelsey Winters.

  • Lauren Valenti and Alexis Strobel answered the CNU goals to tie the game at 2-2 six minutes into the game.

  • The Captains went on a three-goal run to push the lead to 5-2 with tallies from Gracie Sanders, Sam Wettengel and Dyer with 18:04 remaining in the first. 

  • A seven-goal run that spanned 10 minutes helped give Salisbury's its first lead of the contest. Lydia McNulty, Leah Vilov, Riley Hartman, Julie Talbert and Strobel all found the back to push Salisbury's lead to 9-5.
  • CNU tallied two goals from Dyer and Sanders to end the scoring run and cut the Sea Gull lead to three, 10-7, going into the second half. 

  • Coming out of the break, CNU netted three goals to even the score at ten with goals from Lindsay Connell and two from Dyer. 

  • Salisbury went on another scoring run with seven unanswered goals. The Sea Gull run was led by Hartman netting two goals along with tallies from Anna Robinson, Valenti and Talbert to push the score to 17-10.

  • Dyer ended the run with a free position goal to round out the scoring for the Captains with 4:52 remaining in the game. 

  • Delaney Hill and McNulty scored the final two goals of the game to secure the 19-11 win over the Captains.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Lydia McNulty led the Sea Gull offense with six points on four goals and two assists. It is McNulty's eighth consecutive multi-goal game.

  • Riley Hartman tallied three goals to earn her second hat trick of the season.

  • Lauren Valenti collected a team-high five draw controls 

  • Carrie Hesen and Elizabeth Hesen scooped up a team-high three ground balls 

  • Mary Claire Hisle recorded five saves in net for the Sea Gulls. 

  • Salisbury edged the Captains 13-8 in ground balls and 9-4 in ground balls

CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT GAME NOTES

  • Zoe Dyer scored a game-high six goals for the Captains

  • Kelsey Winters dished out a team-high three assists.

  • Sam Wettengel collected a game-high 13 draw controls. 

  • Gracie Sanders caused a team-high two turnovers.

  • CNU won the advantage 18-14 in draw controls over the Sea Gulls

UP NEXT 

  • Salisbury will be back in action on Saturday, April 17 when they visit No. 20 St. Mary's (Md.).

  • The C2C game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
