McNulty scores game-winner in overtime thriller at St. Mary's

ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - A Lydia McNulty goal in the first overtime off a pass from Lauren Valenti helped the second-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team stymie second-half comeback by No, 22 St. Mary's and pick up a 14-13 overtime win in a Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) battle to improve to  11-0 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first three minutes of the game, Salisbury earned the early 3-0 lead with goals from Erin ScannellLydia McNulty and Julie Talbert.
  • St. Mary's answered back with two of their own from Jayne Barkman off an MC Mortimer pass and Lily Davison assisted by Lucy Gussio to bring the game within one, 3-2, six minutes into the first half.
  • The Sea Gulls responded with a five-goal run with scores from Riley Hartman, Alexis Strobel, Scannell, McNulty and Talbert. to push the lead up to 8-2 halfway through the first.
  • Kelly Emge ended the Seahawk scoring drought when she found the back of the net off a Nancy Slaughter pass with 8:36 remaining in the first half.
  • Delaney Hill netted the final goal of the half on a free position at the 3:23 mark to extend the lead 9-3 going into the second half. 
  • Coming out of the halftime break, Salisbury tacked on a pair of goals by Lauren Valenti and McNulty to register an 11-3 lead three and a half minutes into the second.
  • The Seahawks then went on a three-goal run with tallies from Barkman, Davison and Emge to cut the Sea Gull lead, 11-6. 
  • After a Sea Gull goal by Hartman, St. Mary's scored five unanswered goals from Slaughter (2), Emge (2), Gussio to bring the game within one, 12-11, with 11:45 remaining in the game. 
  • Salisbury ended the St. Mary's run with a free position goal from Scannell to give the Sea Gulls the two-goal lead, 13-11, with 7:01 remaining in the game. 
  • Barkman and Davison tallied two back-to-back goals within 15 seconds of one another to tie the game at 13.
  • In the waning moments of regulation, St. Mary's was given a yellow card on a dangerous propel to allow Salisbury to head to overtime with a man-up opportunity.
  • After Valenti won the opening draw of overtime, a patient Salisbury offense allowed Valenti to find McNulty to score the game-winning goal.

  • Kelly Emge scored a team-high four goals for the Seahawks.
  • Jayne Barkman and Lily Davison both tallied three goals each.
  • Barkman collected a game-high eight draw controls.
  • Francesca Ziccardi and Stephanie Heffron paced the defense with two caused turnovers each. 
  • Aimee Uibel recorded 11 saves in the goal for the Seahawks. 
  • St. Mary's earned the 15-14 advantage in the draw circle

  • Salisbury will wrap up the regular season on Tuesday, April 20 with a home top-25 matchup with C2C rival No. 20 Mary Washington.
  • The game is set to begin at 4 p.m. 
  • Prior to the game, Salisbury will recognize the graduating seniors for Senior Day.
