Strobel becomes assists leader in semifinal win over St. Mary's, 16-7

SALISBURY, Md. - Senior attacker Alexis Strobel became the program leader in assists as the first-seeded and fourth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team defeated the fourth-seeded and 22nd-ranked St. Mary's Seahawks, 16-7, to advance to Saturday's Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Championship.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Salisbury jumped out to an 11-0 lead before the Seahawks got on the board.

  • The first five Salisbury goals came off of Alexis Strobel's assists. Strobel found Julie Talbert and Camryn Pepper twice and Lauren Valenti for tallies.

  • Erin Scannell tallied her first goal of the day on an unassisted strike to push the score to 6-0 at the 16:25 mark of the half.

  • Lydia McNulty was involved in the next three Salisbury goals off two goals and an assist on a Talbert goal at 9:02 in the half,  which completed the hat trick for Talbert. 

  • Salisbury tallied two goals by Talbert and Pepper to extend the lead to 11-0 with just over two minutes left in the first half.

  • St. Mary's got on the board with 27 seconds remaining in the first with a man-up goal from Bella Dunigan.

  • Coming out of the break, St. Mary's went on a three-goal run with goals coming from Kelly Emge, Lily Davison and Jayne Barkman to cut the SU lead to 11-4.

  • Salisbury and St. Mary's exchanged goals throughout the middle parts of the second before Salisbury sealed the game with a three-goal run, capped by a Meridith Price unassisted goal at the 2:02 mark.

  • Lucy Gussio rounded out the game's scoring as she netted a goal for Salisbury with 49 seconds left in the game for the contest's final margin.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES 

  • Alexis Strobel tallied six assists in the win, which pushed her past Katie Bollhorst '13 for first in the program history for career assists with 172. Strobel also led the team with three ground balls. 

  • Julie Talbert and Camryn Pepper led the Sea Gull scoring four goals apiece. 

  • Lauren Valenti tallied a hat trick in the win.

  • Carrie Hesen led the Sea Gull defense with a game-high eight draw controls and five caused turnovers while also picking up two ground balls. 

  • Mary Claire Hisle recorded two saves and one ground ball. 

  • Salisbury edged St. Mary's 15-9 in draw controls and 18-10 in ground balls.

ST. MARY'S GAME NOTES

  • Lily Davison led the offense with two goals.

  • Bella Dunigan, Lucy Gussio, Jayne Barkman, Kelly Emge, and Nancy Slaughter all tallied a goal each.

  • Stephanie Heffron and Emge each caused a turnover and picked up four ground balls.

  • Aimee Uibel recorded 11 saves in net for St. Mary's. 

UP NEXT 

  • Salisbury advances to the C2C Championship game and will host the third-seeded CNU Captains on Saturday, May 1.
