No. 4 Women's Lacrosse secures 19th conference title with 17-8 win over No. 20 CNU

SALISBURY, Md. - The fourth-ranked and top-seeded Salisbury University women's lacrosse team survived a late run by the 20th-ranked and third-seeded Christopher Newport Captains to secure a 17-8 win in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Championship and claim the program's 19th conference title on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Alexis Strobel scored the game's first goal off an unassisted tally in the first minute-plus of the game to allow Salisbury to take the early 1-0 lead. 

  • Less than a minute later, Kendall Krause netted CNU's first goal to nod the game at one. 

  • Salisbury went on a five-goal run which was led by Erin Scannell, who netted three goals during the run to push the lead to 6-1 at the halfway point of the half.

  • The Captains ended the Sea Gull run with a strike by Gracie Sanders with 14:33 remaining in the first half. 

  • Salisbury and CNU exchanged goals with strikes from Riley Hartman and Paige Williams to make the score 7-3 with ten minutes remaining in the first half. 

  • Lydia McNulty rounded out the first half with four consecutive goals to extend the Salisbury lead to 11-3 going into the second half. 

  • Coming out of the break, CNU's Paige Williams netted a goal 45 seconds into the second half to lessen the score, 11-4. 

  • Salisbury responded with a three-goal run with tallies from Scannell and McNulty to extend the lead 13-4 with 25:43 remaining. 

  • After the trio of Sea Gull goals, CNU went on a four-goal run led by Williams with two goals while Krause and Sanders tallied one goal each during the run to tighten the score 14-8.

  • Salisbury ended the game to secure the 18-7 win and the C2C Conference championship title with goals from Anna Robinson and McNulty. 

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Lydia McNulty led the scoring for the Sea Gulls with a career-high seven goals, besting her previous mark of six against Southern Virginia on March 30.

  • Erin Scannell scored five goals on five shots, won two draw controls and caused two turnovers. 

  • Lauren Valenti won a team-high six draw controls for the Sea Gulls. 

  • Caroline McKenna scooped up three ground balls for Salisbury's defense. 

  • Mary Claire Hisle recorded nine saves, picked up three ground balls and caused one turnover for the Sea Gulls. 

  • Salisbury edged the Captains 15-12 in ground balls and 14-12 in draw controls. 

CNU GAME NOTES

  • Paige Williams led the Captains' offense with a team-high four goals and one assist. 

  • Sam Wettengel won a game-high seven draw controls. 

  • In goal, Becca Creekmore tallied one save, two ground balls and two caused turnovers. 

  • Taylor Schoolar recorded three saves, two ground balls and one caused turnover as she relieved Creekmore.

  • With today's win, Salisbury earned the C2C's automatic bid to the 2021 NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament.
