Volleyball caps regular season with sweeps of Hunter, Rowan

GLASSBORO, N.J. – The Salisbury University volleyball team wrapped up its regular season in dominant fashion, sweeping the Hunter Hawks, 3-0 (28-26, 25-21, 25-20), and the Rowan Profs, 3-0 (25-8, 25-18, 25-21), at the Rowan Quad on Saturday afternoon at Esbjornson Gymnasium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. HUNTER
  • The first set featured big runs by both sides. The Hawks flipped a 13-9 hole into a 15-13 advantage with six straight points, then the Sea Gulls netted four in a row, going up 17-15 on a kill from Angelina Casserly.
  • Casserly later tied the set at 20-20 on another kill, then the teams danced together all the way to the 26-26 mark, at which point Salisbury put the fixture away, 28-26, on an Amanda Chew kill and Jensen Haas service ace.
  • After giving up the first four points of the second set and eventually falling behind 14-8, SU rallied back to get within 14-12 on a run capped by an ace from Jackie Mitchell. Later on with Hunter up 18-15, Mitchell sparked a three-point swing that allowed the Sea Gulls to tie it 18-18.
  • Trailing 21-20 late in the frame, Salisbury stormed back to score the final five points of the set. Chew landed three kills during the five-point swing, including back-to-back strikes to salt it away at 25-21.
  • The Sea Gulls put some distance between themselves and Hunter early in the third set, using a 7-1 run to flip a 6-5 hole into a 12-7 advantage. Grace Rail dealt an ace to cap the six-point swing.
  • The Hawks never got closer than three the rest of the way. SU eventually opened up a 22-14 lead and soon after finished the job, 25-20, on a kill from Delaney Madsen.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Amanda Chew powered down a team-high 16 kills against no errors over 40 swings, good for a .400 hitting percentage. Chew also clocked a team-high seven digs, two assists, two service aces and a block assist.
  • Angelina Casserly pounded 10 kills, while Jackie Mitchell chipped in eight kills (.412) of her own.
  • Blair Pausic served up 23 assists, plus six digs. Ella Skye Franks assisted on eight kills with three digs and two kills, while Brooke Young chipped in five assists and five digs.
  • Grace Rail contributed six digs and four assists on the back line.
  • Salisbury swung .298 for the match, landing 50 kills against 14 errors on 121 attacks.
HUNTER GAME NOTES
  • Isabella Williams led the Hawks with 11 kills (.250), while Tionna Moss added 10 kills (.240).
  • Bethany Tomaneng served up 27 assists with six digs.
  • Nadia Lau chased down a team-high 16 digs.
  • Hunter managed 35 kills against 17 errors on 107 swings, good for a .168 hitting percentage.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. ROWAN
  • Up 4-3 early in the first set, the Sea Gulls blitzed Rowan, first with three in a row and then four straight, followed by an eight-point run that saw the lead balloon to 19-5. Jenna Feinauer blasted the kill that finished off the 15-2 frenzy.
  • The Profs could never get things going in the opening fixture, and Amanda Chew finished off the quick set with a kill to win it 25-8.
  • Both sides opened the second set with three-point runs, then SU countered with another trio of points to go up 6-3. After putting together two more three-point streaks, Salisbury netted four in a row to go up 18-9 on a run capped by a Jackie Mitchell kill.
  • Rowan chipped away at the lead the rest of the way but it was too little, too late. Mitchell's kill iced the set for Salisbury, 25-18.
  • The Profs regrouped and opened the third set strong, taking an early 10-6 lead. After SU cut the deficit to 11-9, RU netted four in a row to go up 15-9.
  • The Sea Gulls again rallied and got as close as 16-13 before Rowan notched a couple points in a row, then Chew landed a kill and back-to-back service aces to bring SU within 18-16. After one more RU point, Salisbury seized control with a 5-0 run, capped by a Feinauer kill that made it 21-19 for the visitors.
  • Rowan rallied to even things at 21-21, but three straight attack errors and another kill from Mitchell allowed Salisbury to bring the brooms out again with a 25-21 win and sweep.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Amanda Chew again paced the Sea Gull attack with 11 kills on a .321 swing percentage. She also dug out 11 opposing attacks, bringing her up to 41 career double-doubles and 15 this season, and landed four of SU's eight service aces.
  • At 1,131 career kills, Chew now stands one back Courtney Moore '96 for 10th all-time in SU history, as well as four back of Nicole Massarelli '09 and Chelsea Glowacki '12, who are tied for eighth.
  • Jackie Mitchell totaled 10 kills (.32) in the match, while Angelina Casserly and Jenna Feinauer each chipped in six kills and three block assists.
  • Brooke Young notched her own double-double with a team-high 14 assists and 12 digs. Blair Pausic clocked in with 13 assists and six digs.
  • Grace Rail chased down a team-high 17 digs and added five assists.
  • Salisbury powered 38 kills against 13 errors on 110 attacks for a .227 swing percentage.
  • The trio of weekend sweeps gives the Sea Gulls 10 straight-sets victories this season and their first sweeps since Sept. 24.
ROWAN GAME NOTES
  • Natalie Ogden led the Profs with seven kills, while Sydni Greenwood and Isabel Kirchner each added four.
  • Abigail Webster served up 17 assists with five digs.
  • Ogden also paced the RU back line with 12 digs, while Simone Sparano chased down 10.
  • Rowan hit -.009 for the match, committing 21 errors against just 20 kills. It marks the fourth time this season Salisbury has held an opponent to a negative swing percentage.
UP NEXT
  • Salisbury concludes the regular season with a record of 18-7.
  • The Sea Gulls will learn of their Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Tournament matchup early next week. The 2022 C2C Volleyball Tournament begins on Friday, Nov. 4, on the campus of the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.
