Football rolls through William Paterson, 23-0

WAYNE, N.J. – The Salisbury University football team cruised to its third shutout of the season on Saturday with a 23-0 victory over the William Paterson Pioneers in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) action.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Salisbury scored first with just under two minutes left in the first quarter. The Sea Gulls marched down the field in nine plays after long passes by Ben Hutchins to Alex Richards and Hunter Cleaver, Joey Bildstein plowed through with a three-yard touchdown run.
  • After a Bobby Duffy blocked punt put the Sea Gulls in the red zone, Bildstein used just one play to get into the endzone on an 11-yard touchdown run to extend SU's lead to 13-0 at the end of the first quarter.
  • On Salisbury's second possession of the second half, Hutchins broke out with a 38-yard run to put the Sea Gulls on the 11-yard line. Three plays later, Bildstein found pay dirt for the third time in the contest to push the lead to 20-0 in the third.
  • Andrew Petrino capped off the scoring in the fourth with a 29-yard field goal to give Salisbury the 23-0 lead with 11:09 left in the game.
  • Josh Adewumi iced the game in the closing stages of the contest with an interception.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Joey Bildstein set a new career-high in rushing with 150 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries. He bested his previous career-high of 148 yards in last year's contest against William Paterson.
  • In his first career start, Ben Hutchins was 5-of-10 passing for 70 yards. Hutchins also carried the ball eight times for 50 yards.
  • As a team, the Sea Gulls notched 391 yards of total offense.
  • The Salisbury defense continued its strong play to continue its scoreless streak to 14 quarters.
  • Casey Counts, C.J. Wood and Charles Barley all tallied five stops in the game.
  • Barley added three pass breakups.
  • Josh Adewumi and Matthew Harper each intercepted a pass.
WILLIAM PATERSON GAME NOTES
  • The Pioneers were held to 180 yards of total offense.
  • Mele Stallings was 15-of-34 passing for 106 yards.
  • The NJAC's leading rusher, Nazir Dale, was limited to 55 yards on 15 carries.
  • James Nevels had a game-high 12 tackles.
UP NEXT
  • After a bye week, Salisbury will be back on the road on Saturday, Oct. 22 against the TCNJ Lions.
  • Kickoff from Ewing, N.J. is set for 1 p.m.
