Women’s Basketball stumbles against Carnegie Mellon, 68-53

ERIE, Pa. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team dropped a 68-53 decision to the Carnegie Mellon Tartans to open the Penn State-Behrend Tip-Off Tournament on Friday night at the Junker Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sea Gulls kept pace with the Tartans in the first quarter, erasing a 4-0 deficit to get even at 4-4 on a pair of Ashlynn Burrows free throws. SU stayed tied at 6-6 and 8-8 on buckets by Kolby Brown and Alex Bull, respectively.
  • CMU put some distance on the scoreboard to close out the opening period. Up 12-10, Catherine Or sank a pair of free throws and Anisha Chintala put in a layup to give the Tartans a 16-10 advantage.
  • After giving up the first bucket of the second quarter, Salisbury cut the deficit in half on jumpers from Brown and Tori Rumbaugh that made it 18-14 at the 9:15 mark.
  • From there the Tartans went on a tear, netting the next 16 points to build a 34-14 lead with 3:03 until halftime. The Sea Gulls went into the break down 38-21, with a Hailey Ader layup getting the margin to 17.
  • Nadia Bullock sank a layup for the first basket of the third quarter to make it 38-23. That was as close as Salisbury would get in the period, though, as CMU kept the Sea Gulls at an arm's length for the rest of the third. A jumper from Anika Prasad built the Tartan advantage to 54-32 to close out the quarter.
  • The Sea Gulls showed fight in a fourth quarter that saw them outscore CMU 21-14. Trailing 62-39 with 4:29 to go, Brown drilled a three-pointer to set up an 8-2 run that Burrows capped with a layup to make it 64-47 at the 2:49 mark.
  • Last-minute baskets by Bullock and Kayla Nieberlein provided the game's final 68-53 margin.
