MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Salisbury University volleyball team did not go quietly in its exit from the 2022 NCAA Division III Volleyball Tournament, pushing the eighth-ranked New York University Violets to the brink in a 3-2 (25-10, 21-25, 25-16, 18-25, 15-12) second-round loss on Friday evening at Silloway Gymnasium on the campus of Wesleyan University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- After spotting NYU a 6-2 lead early in the first set, the Sea Gulls steadied up and closed the gap to 8-6 on a kill from Amanda Chew. From there the Violets stepped on the gas, though, building a 14-9 lead and netting 11 of the final 12 to coast to a set victory. A block from Leela Avenkar and Ella Weider provided the clinching point in the 25-10 win.
- Salisbury kept a short memory and got back into the swing of things in the second set. Down 8-7, the Sea Gulls notched three in a row on a service error and kills from Jenna Feinauer and Chew to go up 10-8. After the teams traded the next five points, Angelina Casserly blasted a kill to set up another three-point push that made it 15-11.
- The Violets strung together their own three-point run to make it a one-point set, then SU clocked another triple, rebuilding the lead to 18-14 after a Grace Rail ace. Undeterred, NYU rallied for five of the next six, tying it 19-19 on an Olivia Lewandowski kill.
- Tied 21-21 moments later, SU went back up on an attack error. Delaney Madsen dealt a service ace, then after another NYU error Gwen Eustace salted it away for the Sea Gulls, 25-21, with a kill that tied the match at a set apiece.
- NYU busted out of the gate in the third set, taking a 6-1 lead. Down 8-4 later on, Eustace's kill sparked a 6-0 run, with another ace from Rail giving Salisbury a 10-8 cushion.
- The Violets countered with a 7-1 push of their own to go back up 15-11. After the Sea Gulls rallied to cut it to 16-14, NYU strung together four straight, including back-to-back Haley Holz strikes that made it 20-14. The New Yorkers eventually closed it out with four more in a row to claim the third set, 25-16.
- Salisbury punched back to open the fourth set, flipping a 2-1 hole into a 6-2 lead on a five-point swing that Casserly set up with a kill. After NYU rallied to get it down to 8-6, SU forged ahead and built a lead as large as 16-10, which the Violets soon whittled down to 16-14.
- Leading 19-17 later on, Feinauer pounded a kill that sparked a 5-0 run, featuring a pair of aces from Chew, to get it to set point at 24-17. After spotting NYU one more point, the Sea Gulls forced a winner-take-all fifth after a Violet error that capped the fourth set at 25-18.
- Lewandowski opened the fifth set with back-to-back aces, and a ballhandling error gave the Violets an early 3-0 advantage. After SU netted two-of-three to make it 4-2, NYU surged to four straight, going up 8-2 after a Holz kill.
- Undaunted, the Sea Gulls used kills from Eustace and Chew and an attack error to close the gap to 8-5. The teams swapped the next five points, then a Casserly kill and Chew ace got SU within two at 11-9.
- Gabriella Spaethling stepped up with back-to-back kills that rebuilt the NYU lead to 13-9. Casserly answered with back-to-back strikes of her own to whittle it back to 13-11.
- After a service error gave NYU match point at 14-11, Jackie Mitchell kept the Sea Gulls alive with a kill that made it 14-12. Holz closed the matter from there, though, taking a feed from Ava Launsbach and pounding the final kill into the floor to win it 15-12.
