Women’s Basketball bounces back against Hollins, 77-40

SALEM, Va. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team returned to its winning ways with a 77-40 triumph over Hollins University at the Jean Beamer Tip Off Classic on Sunday afternoon at the Cregger Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kolby Brown opened the scoring with a three-pointer in the game's first minute. Ashlynn Burrows soon after poured in back-to-back baskets, and a put-back layup by Emily Dilger made it a 9-0 Sea Gull run within the first three minutes.
  • Hollins broke up the shutout with a three-point play, which Emma Wivell answered with a triple to set off an 8-2 flourish, capped by a three from Tori Rumbaugh that made it 17-5 at the 2:24 mark. HU hit a pair of buckets late in the period to cut the SU advantage to 17-9 after the first.
  • After a pair of HU free throws to open the second quarter, Wivell drilled another trey, then Nadia Bullock connected on back-to-back attempts from downtown to make it 26-13. Bullock then sank a layup, followed by a Burrows jumper and Rumbaugh triple to balloon the SU cushion to 33-13 at the 3:21 mark.
  • Hollins netted five in a row to carve into the deficit, but Dilger answered with a jumper and Bullock connected on her third trey of the quarter, and the Sea Gulls marched into halftime with a 20-point lead at 38-18.
  • The teams danced in close quarters over the first eight minutes of the third period. Then leading 48-28 with 1:39 to go, Alex Bull found Sym Deloatch down low for a layup. HU responded with one-of-two from the line, then Dilger put back her own miss for a hoop and a harm, sinking the free throw to make it 53-29.
  • Dilger countered two more HU free throws with another bucket, then Wivell found Burrows for a late jumper to boost the SU lead to 57-31 at the end of the third.
  • Ainsley Raybold opened up the fourth quarter with a three, setting off a 7-0 Sea Gull run that made it 64-31 with 5:59 to go. Hollins never got closer than 30 the rest of the way, and Nieberlein's layup in the final half-minute equaled SU's largest advantage of 37 points to close the book on a 77-40 triumph.
