Men's Soccer falls in battle in C2C Semis to No. 18 Mary Washington

SALISBURY, Md. – A tough and gritty battle in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Tournament Semifinals went against the Salisbury University men's soccer team as the Sea Gulls fell 1-0 to the 18th-ranked Mary Washington Eagles on Friday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Eagles looked to break into the scoring column early. Starting in the 16th minute, Mary Washington registered three shots on net that all were dangerous chances. Each shot though was denied by Ryan Socks, who made impressive saves to keep the game scoreless.
  • After an Eagle red card that gave the Sea Gulls a man advantage for the rest of the game, Salisbury looked to capitalize on the man-up opportunity right away. On a free kick, Ethan Dolezal sent a blistering shot toward the top-right corner of the net, but the Eagles' goalkeeper poked the ball over the crossbar to keep the score tied.
  • In the 50th minute, the Eagles earned a prime scoring chance. After a foul in the box, Josh Kirkland lined up to take the penalty kick and sent the ball into the back of the net to give the Eagles the lead.
  • The Sea Gulls would try and respond right back. In the 51st minute, Conner Appleby sent a pass into the left side of the box to Sean Barwick. Barwick ripped a one-timer toward the net, but the Eagles' goalkeeper deflected the scoring opportunity away.
  • The Sea Gulls looked for one last opportunity to try and tie the game in the 82nd minute. Appleby sent a pass this time to the right side of the box to David Peters. Peters wound up and sent a rocket of a shot toward the bottom-left corner, but the Eagles' goalkeeper made an incredible diving save to keep the one-goal lead.
