Women’s Soccer falls to No. 3 CNU in C2C Semifinals

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Salisbury University women's soccer team fought hard but was upended by the top-seeded and third-ranked Christopher Newport Captains, 3-1, on Friday afternoon in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Semifinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Autumn Dougherty looked to get Salisbury on the board in the 18th minute after she found some open space in front of the goal, but the Captains keeper came up with the save.
  • CNU scored in the 32nd minute after Jill McDonald converted a penalty kick to make it 1-0.
  • Both teams jostled for possession for the rest of the first half and went into halftime with the same score.
  • The Sea Gulls had an opportunity early in the second half, Autumn Conway ripped a shot off a corner kick that was blocked and Dougherty took a shot on the rebound, but a Captains defender jumped in the way to block the second chance.
  • CNU tallied another goal in the 51st minute to make it 2-0.
  • Lissette Carneiro got the Sea Gulls on the board in the 77th minute with a long shot from outside of the box into the top right corner of the frame to cut into the Captains lead.
  • CNU added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute after Jill McDonald scored her second goal of the day.
  • Carneiro threatened to score again just moments later, but her shot ricocheted off the right post and into the keeper's hands, and the game concluded with a final score of 3-1.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Lissette Carneiro scored the lone goal for Salisbury.
  • Autumn Dougherty led the Sea Gulls with three shots. Dougherty finishes her career seventh in program history in goals scored with 24 and 10th in total points with 54.
  • Four different Sea Gulls put a shot on goal.
  • Riley Pinato tallied three saves in goal.
CNU GAME NOTES
  • Jill McDonald scored two goals for the Captains.
  • Caroline Kulik scored a goal.
  • Jaya Daniel earned the win and tallied four saves in goal.
THE WRAP
  • Salisbury finished the 2022 season with a 9-9-2 overall record and a 0-2-2 record in conference.
