Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball holds off Oglethorpe, 64-54

ATLANTA, Ga. – Returning to action for the first time in nearly three weeks, the Salisbury University women's basketball team got off to a hot start and withstood a late rally to defeat the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels, 64-54, on Thursday afternoon at Dorough Field House.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Alex Bull and Ashlynn Burrows hit buckets on the Sea Gulls' first two possessions to build a quick 4-0 lead. Bull eventually converted a pair of free throws that put SU up 9-4 at the 7:14 mark, but Malia Melton answered for the Stormy Petrels with two field goals to cut the deficit to 9-8.
  • From there Salisbury burst ahead with an 11-3 run to close the first quarter. Burrows got things going with a layup at the 5:53 mark, followed by jumpers from Abby Wilkinson and Nadia Bullock, plus a pair of Ainsley Raybold free throws to make it 17-8. Bullock eventually closed out the period with a jumper to build the SU advantage to 20-11.
  • Wilkinson opened the second quarter with a fastbreak layup to make it 22-11 Sea Gulls. After Oglethorpe netted the next three points, Bullock got them back with a triple and Emily Dilger knocked down a jay to make it 27-14 at the 6:55 mark.
  • After keeping pace through the rest of the second, the Petrels closed the period with a sliver of momentum, shaving a 33-21 deficit down to 35-26 heading into halftime.
  • In the third quarter, Bull hit a pair of free throws to push the lead back to 37-26. Morgan Skipper answered with a layup that set off a 6-0 Oglethorpe run to shrink the hole to 37-32 at the 7:54 mark.
  • Salisbury rebuilt its advantage to 42-32 a minute later, but the Petrels came roaring back with the next 10 points, tying the game at 42-42 on a Melton layup. After a Hailey Ader jumper put SU back on top, Rose Dolmovich nailed a three-pointer to give Oglethorpe its first lead, and the Petrels closed the third on top 48-44.
  • Bull and Wilkinson jumpstarted a Sea Gull eruption to begin the fourth quarter with back-to-back treys, followed by layups from Bullock, Tori Rumbaugh and Bull to make it a 12-0 run and put SU back up 56-48 at the 6:34 mark. Not to be outdone, the Petrels rallied for the next six to get back within 56-54 with 3:17 to go.
  • Salisbury locked down on defense from there and pulled away for good. Burrows' layup made it a two-possession game at 58-54, then a key stop led to a Bullock layup with 1:16 to go that made it 60-54. Burrows and Wilkinson then each hit a pair from the line to salt it away with a final margin of 64-54.
