No. 2 Softball rolls to sixth-straight run-rule win in Sunday sweep of Cortland, Ursinus

SALISBURY, Md. – The second-ranked Salisbury University softball team continued to show its offensive firepower with its 11th consecutive win and sixth-straight run-rule victories with its series sweep over the Cortland Red Dragons and the Ursinus Bears on Sunday. Salisbury opened with an 8-0 win in five innings over Cortland and concluded the weekend sweep with an 11-3 win against Ursinus. Salisbury now sits at 24-2 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED – CORTLAND

  • Salisbury got on the board in the top of the third inning with back-to-back RBI singles by Lauren Meyers and Natalie Paoli to give the maroon and gold the 2-0 lead.
  • Cortland looked to rally in the bottom of the fourth with two runners on with one out, but Savannah Sheats and the SU defense were able to stop the threat. Sheats forced Julz Koch to ground out to shortstop then Sheats stuck out Tori Reich to end the rally.
  • Salisbury put up five runs in the fifth inning. Abby Mace led off the inning with a double and advanced on a fielding error by the left fielder. A batter later, Lindsey Windsor smoked a ground ball to the shortstop that took her glove off and motored to second base for an infield double. Meyers brought Windsor home two batters later with an RBI single.
  • Later in the fifth, Carrie Jacoby laced a triple to the right-center gap to score Paoli and Taylor Scott. Meghan Reed and Emily Stockman followed with run-scoring singles to give SU the 8-0 advantage.
  • Cortland got a base runner to second after a double by Alyssa Finno but Nicole Ortega shut the door on a run-rule with a strikeout of Gina Meyers to end the game.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES VS. CORTLAND

HOW IT HAPPENED – URSINUS

  • Abby Mace led off the game with a home run to the opposite field. Two batters later, Maddison Lednum scored Lindsey Windsor on an error by the Ursinus second baseman. Lednum later scored a sacrifice fly by Carrie Jacoby to give Salisbury the early 3-0 lead in the first.
  • Salisbury tacked on two more runs in the second with Francesca Cuttitta scoring on a passed ball and Lindsey Windsor driving home Mace on an RBI single.
  • Ursinus cut into the lead with a run in the third and two runs in the fourth to trim the lead to 5-3.
  • Salisbury ended the game with eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The inning was highlighted by back-to-back home runs with a three-run blast by Windsor and a walk-off solo bomb by Lednum to give the Sea Gulls the 11-3 victory.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES VS. URSINUS

  • Abby Mace, Lindsey Windsor and Maddison Lednum at the top of the lineup combined to go 7-for-10 with eight RBIs, seven runs scored and three home runs.
  • Windsor tied a career-high with four runs batted in. She also collected her third save of the season.
  • Nicole Ortega (W, 4-1) did not allow a hit in two innings with a strikeout.

UP NEXT

  • Salisbury heads north to Pennsylvania on Sunday, April 3 with a doubleheader against the York Spartans and the Susquehanna River Hawks,
  • The Sea Gulls begin the twin bill with the River Hawks at 1 p.m. in York, Pa.
