No. 8 Softball splits opening day of NFCA Leadoff Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The eighth-ranked Salisbury University softball team split a pair of games on the first day of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic. Salisbury opened the tournament with a 7-4 victory over sixth-ranked Eastern Connecticut State before suffering its first defeat of the new season with a 7-4 decision against 17th-ranked Berry.

HOW IT HAPPENED – ECSU

  • Lauren Meyers put the Sea Gulls on the board in the top of the first with an RBI single that scored Abby Mace.
  • Salisbury got three runs across in the second on an RBI double by Emily Stockman. Later in the inning, Stockman and Mace scored when on a fielding error by ECSU.
  • Lindsey Windsor stretched Salisbury's lead to 5-0 in the early goings with an RBI single that plated Kat Nashold.
  • After ECSU's Brooke Matyasovsky solo homered in the third to put the Warriors on the board, Carly Galbreath got the runs back in the fifth with a two-run single that gave Salisbury some insurance late in the game.
  • ECSU chipped away at the lead and cut the SU advantage to 7-4 in the seventh but Savannah Sheats got the final out when Carley Stoker struck out to end the game.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES VS. ECSU

  • Lauren Meyers paced the offense with three hits and added an RBI and a run scored.
  • Abby Mace scored and walked twice in the leadoff spot.
  • Lindsey Windsor and Carly Galbreath each tallied two hits. Galbreath also drove in a pair of runs.
  • Windsor (W, 5-0) collected her fifth win of the season with five innings of work with four strikeouts. She only allowed four hits and a run in the start.
  • Savannah Sheats (SV, 1) picked up her first save since the 2020 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED - BERRY

  • After a first-inning home run by Anna Jackson, Berry tacked out five runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead.
  • Salisbury plated three runs in the third inning to trim the Berry lead. Meyers doubled to score Mace to open the scoring for Salisbury. Two batters later, Galbreath hit her second two-run single of the day to score Meyers and Natalie Paoli.
  • Mace brought the Berry lead down to 6-4 in the fourth inning when she hit a single to score Francesca Cuttitta from second base.
  • Berry added an insurance run in the top of the sixth when Katie White hit an RBi single to extend the Viking lead to 7-4.

UP NEXT

  • The Sea Gulls clash with the 14th-ranked Piedmont Lions and the Central Dutch on Saturday on Day Two of the NFCA Leadoff Classic.
  • The day is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
