No. 2 Softball tames Stevenson in doubleheader sweep

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The second-ranked Salisbury University softball team breezed by the Stevenson Mustangs and improved to 32-4 on the season with a doubleheader sweep on Sunday. The Sea Gulls scored seven runs in the fifth inning to run-rule and one-hit the Mustangs, 9-0, in the opener. SU followed up with another shutout in the second game with a 6-0 win over the Mustangs.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1

  • Salisbury didn't get the bats going until the fourth inning. Natalie Paoli led off the fourth with a single and stole second. Lauren Meyers followed with a two-run blast to left-center.
  • The bats stayed hot in the fifth inning to the tune of seven runs. Paoli drew a bases-loaded walk before Meyers drove in a pair of an RBI singles up the middle. The line kept going with RBIs by Maddison Lednum, Meghan Reed, Carly Galbraith and Emily Challender to extend the lead to 9-0.
  • Nicole Ortega entered the game in the fifth and struck out the side to close the game out.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Eight of the nine starters in the game recorded a hit.
  • Lauren Meyers collected two hits with a home run and drove in four to match a career-high RBI total.
  • Maddison Lednum also tallied a pair of hits.
  • Lindsey Windsor (W, 13-0) pitched four innings and only allowed a hit in the first inning. She struck out six and did not draw a walk.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2

  • Madi Lemon opened the third inning with a double to center. Two batters later, Paoli smacked a double to center to drive in Lemon and start the scoring.
  • With two runners on in the fifth, Meyers launched her second home run of the day down the left-field line to extend Salisbury's lead 4-0.
  • Abby Mace gave Salisbury insurance in the seventh inning with a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

SALISBURY GAME NOTES

  • Abby Mace and Madi Lemon each notched two hits and two runs scored. Mace hit her 13th home run of the season and ranks second in the nation in homers.
  • Lauren Meyers knocked in two hits with her three-run blast in the fifth. Meyers totaled seven RBIs in the doubleheader.
  • Savannah Sheats (W, 13-2) picked up the win and struck out two batters with four hits allowed.

UP NEXT

  • Salisbury concludes the regular season on Thursday, April 28 against the Washington Shorewomen.
  • First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Chestertown, Md.
