PREVIEW: No. 4 Softball hosts Mount St. Joseph in Super Regionals

SALISBURY, Md. – The "Road to Salem" for the fourth-ranked Salisbury University softball team will continue in the friendly confines of Sea Gull Softball Stadium as the Sea Gulls take on the Mount St. Joseph Lions in the NCAA Softball Championship Super Regionals. The best-of-three series begins on Friday at 2 p.m. with a super-regional champion to be decided on Saturday.

HOW WE GOT HERE

  • Salisbury rolled through the home regional with a 9-0 run-rule win over Framingham St. to begin the tournament before back-to-back wins over Endicott to capture the region championship.
  • Natalie Paoli played the hero in the regional semifinal against Endicott with a walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to give the Sea Gulls the 2-1 victory over the Gulls.
  • An Abby Mace three-run home run would prove to be the deciding hit to send the Sea Gulls to the Super Regionals with a 5-2 victory in the regional finals over Endicott.
  • Savannah Sheats collected two wins in the circle during the regionals. She only allowed two earned runs in her appearances with a 1.17 ERA and seven strikeouts.

HOW THEY GOT HERE

  • The champions of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, Mount St. Joseph entered the tournament as the second seed and defeated Transylvania, 5-3, in the Heartland Championship.
  • As the fourth seed in the Geneseo Regional, the Lions took down the host SUNY-Geneseo 7-5 in the opening game of the tournament. After beating Babson, 3-1, in the regional semifinal, the Lions traded wins in the regional championship series.
  • MSJ lost the first game in the championship series, 4-2, to Babson. The Lions rebounded in the winner-take-all game with a 5-3 victory over the Beavers to earn the trip east to the Shore.
  • The Lions have leaned on senior Kamryn McCool in the circle all year. McCool has a 19-5 record with a 1.32 ERA with 177 strikeouts.

WHAT'S ON THE LINE

The winner of the Salisbury Super Regional will advance to the NCAA Division III Softball Championship in Salem, Va. The double-elimination tournament begins on May 26 at Moyer Park.
