Volleyball splits final day of Garnet Invitational

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Salisbury University volleyball team split its two matches over the final day at the Garnet Invitational, sweeping the Clark Cougars 3-0 (25-13, 25-16, 25-17) before falling to the hosting Swarthmore Garnet 3-0 (25-21, 25-10, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon at Tarble Pavillion.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. CLARK
  • Leading 8-4 early in the first set, the Sea Gulls gained some distance over their foes by scoring 14 of the next 17 points. Back-to-back kills from Natalie Uibel and Amanda Chew increased the SU lead to 22-7.
  • After CU rallied for six straight, Salisbury netted the final three on a service error and kills from Jackie Mitchell and Chew to salt away the frame 25-13.
  • Nursing a 7-5 lead in the second set, Delaney Madsen landed a kill that set off an 8-2 run that ballooned the Sea Gull advantage to 15-7.
  • The Cougars kept pace and got as close as five points but it was too little, too late, as Jensen Haas set up Mitchell for a kill that finished off the set at 25-16.
  • The Sea Gulls rattled off six points in a row to begin the third set. Chew blasted two kills and Uibel landed both a kill and a service ace during the run.
  • Up 10-4 later in the frame, Salisbury went on another 6-0 flourish, eventually netting eight-of-nine to boost the lead to 18-5.
  • Clark strung together eight in a row to get back within 18-13, but SU refused to let the lead shrink further. Chew notched two kills and a block assist in Salisbury's final 7-4 push, and Uibel put the match in the books with a kill, wrapping up the final frame 25-17.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Amanda Chew continued her hot start to the season, leading the Sea Gulls in both kills (12) and digs (13) for her third double-double in six matches and 29th of her career.
  • Jackie Mitchell and Natalie Uibel racked up seven kills apiece.
  • Mitchell, Gwen Eustace and Delaney Madsen swatted two block assists each.
  • Ella Skye Franks led SU with 12 assists, plus four digs and a service ace. Blair Pausic and Brooke Young each recorded eight assists.
  • Kayla Pedersen finished with 12 digs over two sets, while Grace Rail dug out 10 attacks in just one set of work.
  • Salisbury landed 38 kills against 17 errors over 113 swings, good for a .186 hitting percentage. The Sea Gulls forced Clark to swing in the red at a -0.042 clip (20 kills, 25 errors).
  • The Sea Gulls' six-game winning streak marks their longest since 2019 when SU opened the season at 8-0.
CLARK GAME NOTES
  • Victoria Pastor led the Cougars with seven kills (.192), while Sofia Scherrer del Llano added six kills and a team-high 10 digs.
  • Margarita Perez-Maza served up seven assists.
  • Marimo Oka recorded eight digs and three assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. SWARTHMORE
  • The teams traded runs throughout a competitive first set. With the Garnet up 16-15, Salisbury went on a 6-1 run, capped by a Gwen Eustace kill to make it 21-17.
  • Swarthmore then took it up a notch, though, scoring the final eight points of the set. Ellie Streeper's service ace put it away at 25-21.
  • The Garnet kept the ball rolling through the second set, ballooning an early 6-4 lead into 16-4 with 10 straight tallies. Salisbury regrouped and kept pace through the 18-8 mark, at which point Swarthmore netted five in a row and seven of the final nine to salt it away at 25-10.
  • The Sea Gulls came out fighting in the third set, taking an early 6-3 lead and eventually pushing it to 10-6 on three straight kills from Angelina Casserly, Brooke Young and Natalie Uibel.
  • Swarthmore rattled off another big run, though, using a six-point push to regain a 12-10 lead. The teams traded blows from there, with Amanda Chew bringing SU even at 16-16 with a kill.
  • The Garnet ultimately inched toward the finish line, taking a 22-20 lead and icing the set and match 25-20 on two attack errors and a Kaylee Zhang kill.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Amanda Chew registered her third straight double-double, fourth in seven matches and 30th of her career, powering 10 kills (.226) and 16 digs.
  • Delaney Madsen pounded five kills at a .500 clip, while Jackie Mitchell and Natalie Uibel landed four kills apiece.
  • Blair Pausic came close to her own double-doubles with a team-high 13 assists and eight digs. Brooke Young added eight assists of her own.
  • Grace Rail paced the back line with 19 digs, plus five assists.
  • Salisbury landed 29 kills against 21 errors on 118 swings (.068).
SWARTHMORE GAME NOTES
  • Chloe Mayhue clocked 10 kills and 12 digs, while Kaylee Zhang matched her teammate's double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs of her own.
  • Dani Pena notched 29 assists and led the Garnet with three service aces.
  • Ellie Streeper chased down 20 digs and served up two aces.
  • Swarthmore swung .193 on the match, landing 38 kills against 15 errors over 119 swings.
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls finish off their season-opening eight-game road trip at Washington (Md.) on Tuesday night.
  • First serve from Chestertown, Md., is slated for 6 p.m.
