Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Carr, Bloodworth pace men’s basketball at No. 4 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Four Sea Gulls reached double figures but the Salisbury University men's basketball team dropped its Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference opener to the fourth-ranked Christopher Newport Captains, 84-74, on the road Saturday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • CNU opened the game with a 9-2 run capped off by a Jahn Hines jumper just over three minutes into the match.
  • Salisbury battled back to within two, 15-13, after Sean Carr knocked down an easy jumper with 12:51 on the clock.
  • A few minutes later, Carr knocked down another jumper and a triple on back-to-back possessions to take the lead for the Sea Gulls, 22-19, with 10:48 remaining in the half.
  • A three-point jumper by Jordan Oates gave Salisbury a four-point lead, 27-23, at the 9:28 mark.
  • Both teams traded baskets and the lead for the next several minutes before Brendan Davis drilled a trey to give the Sea Gulls another four-point lead, 40-36, with just 3:21 left in the first half.
  • Greg Bloodsworth made a tough driving layup in the final minute of the half to give Salisbury its largest lead of the half, 47-42, but a steal and a dunk by the Captains in final seconds sent the teams into halftime with a score of 47-44.
  • The back-and-forth battle continued at the start of the second half before CNU used a 7-0 run to retake the lead and go up 55-49 with 16:15 left on the clock.
  • The Sea Gulls charged back to within one, 56-57, after a jumper in the paint by Carr with 11:20 remaining in the game.
  • The Captains jumped back out to six-point lead, 64-58, but two free throws from Carr and a layup from Brandon Craig brought Salisbury within two, 64-62, with 7:46 left to play.
  • CNU used a 13-4 run to go up 77-66 with 5:01 remaining.
  • Another layup from Craig cut the lead down to seven, 77-70, with 4:05 on the clock.
  • Both teams traded baskets and free throws over the next few minutes. Two free throws in the final minute from Bloodsworth kept the Sea Gulls within seven, 81-74.
  • CNU made its free throws down the stretch to give the game its final score of 84-74.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Salisbury shot 45.2 percent (28-for-62) from the field, including 35.7 percent (5-for-14) from three-point range. The team shot 54.3 percent (19-of-35) in the first half.
  • Greg Bloodsworth led the Sea Gulls with 21 points on 8-for-17 shooting. He also grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists.
  • Sean Carr scored a career-high 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting. Carr bested his previous high of 18 points against PSU-Altoona a season ago.
  • Jordan Oates fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine boards.
  • Brandon Craig scored 13 points and hauled in eight rebounds.
CNU GAME NOTES
  • CNU shot 49.3 percent (33-for-67) from the field, including 35.7 percent (5-for-14) from three-point range.
  • Jahn Hines scored a career-high 33 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
  • Matthew Brodie scored 16 points and hauled in nine boards.
  • Trey Barber chipped in 12 points.
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls will host C2C foe UC Santa Cruz on Thursday, Feb. 2.
  • Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Maggs PAC in Salisbury.
