The Rundown

The sixth-ranked Salisbury University field hockey team opens national tournament play in the second round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 11. After earning a first-round bye, the Sea Gulls will do battle with eighth-ranked Williams on the campus of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. Opening pushback from Homewood Field is scheduled for 1 p.m.

  • No. 6 Salisbury enters the big dance with a 13-4 record. The Sea Gulls went 12-3 in the regular season and finished second in the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C). In the C2C Tournament, SU defeated Mary Washington 6-1 in the semifinals before bowing to Christopher Newport 2-0 in the championship.
  • The Sea Gulls earned one of six first-round byes into the NCAA Tournament, joining Babson, CNU, Johns Hopkins, Messiah, and Middlebury.
  • Salisbury placed six players on the All-C2C team: Marli McDorman, Christine Goetz, Mack Dinopoulos, Isabel Larrabee, Alayna Gigliotti, and McKenna Horner. McDorman was recognized as C2C Rookie of the Year, while Goetz took home C2C Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
  • No. 8 Williams bested Worcester State 6-0 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Wednesday.
  • The Ephs enter Saturday's showdown with a record of 12-7, including a 6-4 mark in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). WC earned an at-large bid into the field after dropping the NESCAC Championship at Middlebury 4-0 last Sunday.
  • Three Williams players earned All-NESCAC recognition. Defender Pilar Torres and forward Kiki Higgins were named First-Team All-NESCAC, while midfielder Liz Scarcella made the All-NESCAC Second Team.
  • Saturday will be the third all-time meeting between the Sea Gulls and the Ephs, all of which will have occurred in the past 365 days.
  • In the 2022 NCAA Tournament quarterfinals, Williams upset undefeated Salisbury 2-0 at Sea Gull Stadium to advance to national semifinals.
  • This past Oct. 8, the Sea Gulls got their revenge with a 1-0 win over the Ephs at a neutral-site matchup in Glassboro, N.J. A 50th-minute goal by Arden Hunteman proved to be enough for SU.
  • The winner of the Salisbury-Williams matchup will battle the winner of Saturday's Johns Hopkins-Ithaca showdown in the NCAA quarterfinals, which will be held Sunday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m.
  • The Sunday winner will advance to championship weekend at Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Va. on Friday and Sunday, Nov. 17 and 19, at Jennings Family Stadium. Semifinal matchups will take place on Friday at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. with the national championship scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
