Women's Basketball falls to TCNJ to open Messiah Tournament, 61-42

GRANTHAM, Pa. ­ - The Salisbury University women's basketball team picked up their first loss of the new campaign as The College of New Jersey pulled away on Friday evening, 61-42, at Jordan Court in Hitchcock Arena.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sea Gulls and the Lions went back and forth during the first quarter, with TCNJ holding the largest lead of seven points at the 3:22 mark.  Salisbury cut the lead to three after a layup by Alex Bull and a jumper by Cora Shafer to close out the quarter.
  • Salisbury had a strong second quarter to go into halftime with a 24-20 lead after outscoring the Lions 12-5. Bull scored six of the Sea Gulls' 12 points in the quarter, with Shafer, Abby Plaugher, and Nicole Miller scoring the rest.
  • The Sea Gulls were unable to maintain the lead after the break as the Lions came out of the locker room on the hunt. TCNJ shot 50 percent (8-16) from the floor in the third quarter, taking a 17-point lead with 1:37 to go. Salisbury was able to cut the margin down to 11 to close out the quarter after Hailey Ader knocked down four free throws and Bull added a layup.
  • Salisbury was outscored by TCNJ 17-9 in the final period. In the final minute of the contest, Katie Fricker extended the Lions' lead to 22 with a fast break layup. The Sea Gulls responded with a three-pointer by Plaugher to close out the contest.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES
  • Alex Bull led the team with 12 points, going 6-13 from the floor with one assist and two rebounds.
  • Cora Shafer added 11 points of her own, shooting 5-9 from the floor with eight rebounds, four blocks, and two assists.
  • Hailey Ader scored eight points while adding nine rebounds and two blocks.
  • The Sea Gulls shot 37 percent (17-46) from the floor. They went 2-8 from beyond the arc and 6-11 at the charity stripe.
TCNJ GAME NOTES
  • Julia Setaro was lights out for the Lions, scoring 17 points after shooting 7-10 from the floor. She also added a rebound and two assists.
  • Katie Fricker added 10 points, shooting 50 percent (2-4) from behind the three-point line.
  • The Lions finished with a 38.1 (24-63) field-goal percentage, going 8-29 from three-point land and went 5-8 at the free-throw line.
UP NEXT
  • The Sea Gulls will compete against Delaware Valley in the consolation game of the Messiah Tip-Off Tournament.
  • Tip-off from Jordan Court in Hitchcock Arena is scheduled for 1 p.m.
