Volleyball advances to C2C Championship with 3-1 win over CNU

SALISBURY, Md. – The Salisbury University volleyball team earned its place in the 2023 Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) Championship match with a 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 19-25, 25-21) victory over Christopher Newport on Friday afternoon at Maggs Physical Activities Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A pair of kills from Emma Quandt powered the Sea Gulls to a 5-0 lead in the first frame, but the Captains responded with four of their own to bring the margin within one. Each team rattled off a pair of two-point swings to set the score at 9-8.
  • Salisbury claimed nine of the next 13 points to build an 18-12 advantage. CNU did not go quietly, taking 10 of the next 12 points, but a late Sea Gull surge saw the squad take five of the final six. A Captain attack error secured the 25-23 opening set victory for SU.
  • The second set played out eerily similar to the first. The C2C sides skirmished to an even 14-14 tie through 28 points before Salisbury rattled off six consecutive points to lead 20-14.
  • After trading the next four points, the Captains netted five in a row to bring the contest within one, 22-21. Salisbury forced the set point, but CNU netted a pair to narrow the gap, 24-23. A clutch put-away from Natalie Uibel clinched the second set, handing SU its second 25-23 set win of the afternoon.
  • The Captains found a groove in the third set. After an 8-8 tie to open the frame, CNU stormed out to a 20-11 advantage after taking 12 of 15.
  • Salisbury fought down the stretch, bringing the match within five points late at 24-19, but a kill by Megan James gave the Captains a 25-19 win in the third set.
  • Neither side gave an inch through the bulk of the final frame. An early four-point swing put Salisbury ahead 8-4, but CNU quickly cut the lead to two before the sides traded the next eight points to a 12-10 score.
  • The teams traded two-point swings, then three-point swings before landing at a 19-15 score in favor of SU. The Captains claimed five of the next six, but Salisbury did the very same, punctuated by a pair of kills from Kiley McTaggart and a Grace Rail service ace to win the set, 25-21, and take the match by a 3-1 final.
