GAME NOTES

The Series: Salisbury and McDaniel have only met on the gridiron once. The Green Terror bested the Sea Gulls 36-17 in Salisbury on Oct. 31, 1998.

Last Time Out: Salisbury saw its three-game winning streak come to an end with a 36-27 home loss to TCNJ last Saturday.

The Sea Gulls racked up 353 total yards of offense, including 259 rushing yards. Ben Hutchins (129 yards) and Joey Bildstein (126 yards) gave SU two 100-yard rushers for the second straight game. Bildstein ran it into the endzone twice, while Ronald Clark also scored a rushing touchdown.

Josh Barker made nine tackles (three solo) to lead the SU defense. The Sea Gulls failed to force a turnover for the first time since Oct. 23, 2021 against Kean, snapping a 21-game regular season turnover streak.

NJAC/Centennial Series: The Salisbury-McDaniel matchup will be played as part of the Centennial vs. NJAC Football Challenge, a football scheduling alliance between the two conferences. The agreement begins with the 2023 season and runs for two years with the potential for renewal in future seasons.

The Sea Gulls are 0-2 against Centennial teams this season with losses against Muhlenberg and Johns Hopkins.

Team Captains: Salisbury named four captains before the start of preseason camp: seniors Casey Counts and Joey Bildstein, along with juniors Jimmy Celentano and Tony Mason. Senior Brock Keeler, as well as juniors Jake Bendorf and Tre Price, have also been named captains for the McDaniel game.

Mr. 200: Salisbury's 35-20 win at Rowan on Oct. 21 was the 200th in the career of Salisbury head coach Sherman Wood. He became just the 12th active football coach across all levels of the NCAA to reach 200 career wins. Wood, who began his career at Bowie State in 1993 before arriving in Salisbury in 1999, joins a shortlist of college football's winningest bosses, including Alabama's Nick Saban, North Carolina's Mack Brown, and LSU's Brian Kelly.

The all-time winningest coach in Sea Gull football history, Wood has guided Salisbury to 19 postseason appearances (including 18 straight entering the 2023 season), 10 NCAA Tournament berths, and nine conference championships while producing 18 D3football.com All-Americans and 304 all-conference selections.

Class of the NJAC: Since joining the NJAC in 2015, Salisbury has won 51 league games, the most among active teams in the conference. The Sea Gulls have won five NJAC championships in their first eight years in the league and went undefeated in NJAC play for four straight seasons, winning 21 straight conference games from 2019 through 2022.

The Sea Gulls are in pursuit of their fifth straight conference championship after wearing the NJAC crown in 2019, spring 2021, 2021, and 2022. SU's four-title streak is tied for the third-longest in league history. Montclair State won a record six consecutive NJAC titles from 1981-86 and five straight from 1969-73, while Rowan (as Glassboro State) captured four in a row from 1974-77.

With a 3-2 mark in conference play, SU still has a chance to clinch a share of the NJAC title. The Sea Gulls would have to beat Kean next week, while league-leading Christopher Newport would have to lose its final two games against Montclair State and TCNJ.

All Aboard the B-Train: After missing the first four games of the season with an injury, Joey Bildstein hasn't lost a step in his return to the gridiron, rushing for 516 yards and an NJAC-leading nine touchdowns over his first four games. With a pair of scores against TCNJ, Bilstein now has nine career multi-touchdown games and has powered into the end zone at least once in nine straight NJAC contests.

A two-time All-NJAC First Team superback, Bildstein enters the TCNJ game with 2,716 career rushing yards, good for eighth in program history after surpassing Dan Griffin '12 (2,642) last week. Despite missing the first four games, Bildstein still ranks 37th in Division III in rushing touchdowns and 120th in rushing yards.

Ball Hawking: Salisbury ranks second in the nation in fumbles recovered (13), led by national co-leader Casey Counts with four. The Sea Gulls rank 33rd nationally in turnovers gained (18) and 79th in turnover margin (0.38). SU has also blocked five kicks this season – four extra points and a punt – good for 14th in the country.

Scouting McDaniel: McDaniel has gone 0-8 thus far in 2023 and 0-5 in Centennial Conference play. The Green Terror are coming off a 49-6 loss at Ursinus last week. MC has only played in two games decided by 10 points or fewer this season, losses to Gettysburg (27-20) and Franklin & Marshall (27-17).

The Green Terror finished last year at 3-7, with the team's most recent win coming against Gettysburg (19-16) on Nov. 5, 2022. McDaniel last posted a non-losing record in 2010 when it finished 5-5; the program's last winning season came when it went 6-4 and won a share of the CC in 2004.

Freshman quarterback Angel Granado, Jr. took over as McDaniel's primary signal caller in the Gettysburg game on Sept. 30. He has completed 58.8 percent of his passes for 920 yards, six touchdowns, and four interceptions. Trent Gaskins leads the ground game with 478 rushing yards and four touchdowns. The Green Terror sport a pair of 400-yard receivers in Sean Carter and Logan Marsh, who have combined for 901 receiving yards, while Hunter Sigler has caught a team-high five touchdown passes.

Graduate linebacker Mike Dunn leads the Green Terror defense with 58 tackles (27 solo) and 3.5 sacks. Jevin Tranquillo and Alex Brown have also dropped the quarterback three times each. Chris Wilson has patrolled the secondary to the tune of two interceptions and four pass breakups.
