Men's Soccer's season ends in PKs against UW-Platteville

SALISBURY, Md. – After 110 hard-fought minutes, the Salisbury University men's soccer team saw its 2023 season come to a close on Wednesday, falling in penalty kicks against the UW-Platteville Pioneers, 0-0 (4-3).

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Sea Gulls found the first shot of the contest when Ethan Dolezal fired one high in the third minute. The Pioneers did not idle long, finding their first two shots in the 11th and 12th minutes and forcing Skyler McCarthy to make a save.
  • UW-Platteville held Salisbury without a shot for the remainder of the opening half while tallying three of their own, but the contest stayed scoreless at the first intermission.
  • The next shot-on-goal came for Platteville in the 61st minute, a low left look that McCarthy secured. Cooper Santos placed a shot on target 13 minutes later, but the Pioneers net-minder turned away the chance.
  • Sean Barwick tested the opposing keeper in the final seconds of regulation but the chance was denied to force overtime.
  • Platteville outshot 5-1 across both 10-minute periods, with McCarthy making three key saves to force the penalty kicks, which the Pioneers won 4-3.

  • Jack Gentilli and Justin Williams each put two shots on target.
  • Seth Aiken made two saves in the full 110 minutes and made two penalty saves.
  • The Pioneers tallied four corners.
WRAPPING UP
  • Salisbury concludes the 2023 season with a 7-5-5 record, finishing the year with seven fewer losses than the team's 5-12-2 finish a season ago.
