Women’s Basketball falters at UMW in regular season finale

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team dropped its regular season finale, 51-34, against the Mary Washington Eagles on Saturday afternoon at the William M. Anderson Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After giving up the game's first four points, the Sea Gulls countered with a layup from Alex Bull to make it 4-2 at the 8:42 mark of the first quarter.
  • From there the Eagles took a smothering approach on defense and closed the opening period on a 13-3 run. Jordan Carpenter got the surge going with four straight points, and a pair of Megan Baxter free throws boosted the UMW lead to 17-5 at the end of the first.
  • Salisbury regrouped and got back into the game in the second quarter. Bull hit a pair of early free throws to make it 19-7, then Ashlynn Burrows sank a jumper and Abby Wilkinson answered an Eagle two with a three, making it 21-12 at the 7:15 mark.
  • UMW rebuilt its lead to 23-12, but Wilkinson got the ball rolling for the Sea Gulls with a layup at the 2:02 mark. Bull then hit two foul shots and Wilkinson sank another layup inside the final minute. After a defensive stop, Bull drained a triple at the buzzer, bringing SU within one possession at 23-20 entering the half.
  • The teams engaged in a defensive battle in the first five minutes of the third quarter. After UMW opened on a 6-1 run, Nadia Bullock hit a jumper to make it a two-possession game again, 29-23, at the 5:19 mark.
  • Carpenter and Bullock exchanged three-point plays to make it 32-26, and Emily Dilger converted a layup with 1:25 left to get SU within 32-28. UMW answered with six of the next eight, using a Baxter layup to go up 38-30 at the end of the third.
  • The Eagles' shutdown defense returned in the fourth quarter as they held SU to just four points in the period. UMW closed the game on a 7-0 run over the final five minutes, with Lexi Miller's jay providing the final margin of 51-34.
