No. 3 Softball sweeps No. 21 Rochester to open 2023

SALISBURY, Md. – The third-ranked Salisbury University softball team swept the 21st-ranked Rochester Yellowjackets in a doubleheader to open the 2023 season on Thursday.

HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 1
  • Emily Stockman opened the season's scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a two-run blast to left field.
  • Madi Lemon followed Stockman's homer with a double that rang off the top of the center-field wall. Sam Flowers brought Lemon home on an RBI triple to right center.
  • A batter later, Abby Mace sent a bomb over the center-field fence to extend the Sea Gull lead to 4-0 after two innings,
  • The Sea Gulls exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the third inning. Maddison Lednum led off the third with a homer to left field. Two batters later, Stockman knocked a single to center to plate McKenna Horner. After a bases-loaded walk that scored Ellen Stockman, Mace launched a grand slam over the left-center field fence that extended Salisbury's lead to 11-0.
  • Rochester got a run back in the fourth inning but it wasn't enough to overcome the run rule.
SALISBURY GAME NOTES – GAME 1
  • Six of Salisbury's 10 hits in the opener were extra-base hits, including four home runs.
  • Abby Mace showed no rust in the season opener with a pair of dingers, including the grand slam in the third inning.
  • Emily Stockman knocked her first home run of the season and drove in three runs on two hits.
  • Maddison Lednum smacked her first homer of the season.
  • Jillian Dawson went 3-for-3 at the two-spot in the lineup.
  • Sam Flowers drove in two runs in her collegiate debut.
  • Savannah Sheats (W, 1-0) pitched three perfect innings with three strikeouts to earn the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED – GAME 2
  • The nightcap was the opposite of the opener with a pitchers' duel between Salisbury's Lindsey Windsor and Rochester's Molly Broccolo.
  • Rochester looked to strike first in the third inning after a leadoff triple by Alexis Klee. Bailey Nicholoff blooped a single to left field looking to score Klee but Sam Flowers sent a frozen rope to the plate to nail Klee and keep the game scoreless.
  • The Yellowjackets did get a run across in the top of the fourth on a leadoff home run by Jenna Gorecki.
  • Salisbury stormed back in the bottom of the sixth to take the one-run lead. Jillian Dawson began the inning with an infield single and stole second base. Windsor followed with an RBI single that squeaked through the left side of the infield to score Dawson and tie the game at one. McKenna Horner scored from third base on an error to allow Salisbury to take the 2-1 lead.
  • Nicole Ortega struck out the final two batters of the game to shut the door on the doubleheader sweep.
