Women’s Basketball battles at Randolph-Macon

ASHLAND, Va. – The Salisbury University women's basketball team led at halftime and fought hard to the finish in a 58-48 defeat against the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets on Tuesday evening at Crenshaw Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Alex Bull led an early charge for the Sea Gulls, netting six of the team's first eight points over the game's first five minutes. Bull's two free throws brought SU even at 8-8 with 5:07 remaining in the first quarter.
  • The Yellow Jackets then went on a 7-1 run over the next four minutes, using a Catherine Kagey layup to build a 15-9 lead. Tori Rumbaugh answered with a jumper to keep Salisbury within four, 15-11, at the end of the first.
  • RMC got off to a hot start in the second, riding an 8-3 push to go up 23-14. Devan Conrad's jay at the 7:40 mark gave the Yellow Jackets their largest lead of the first half.
  • From there the Sea Gulls turned the tide in their favor. Bull got the train rolling with a three-pointer, then Emily Dilger sank two at the line to make it 23-19. After a Kagey layup, Bull again connected from distance and Rumbaugh's jumper made it a one-point game, 25-24, with 4:12 until the half.
  • Conrad answered with a layup to make it a three-point game, at which point Salisbury netted seven in a row on buckets from Abby Wilkinson and Rumbaugh and a Kolby Brown trey to make it 31-27 SU. Morgan Miller's triple made it a one-point game, then Hailey Ader poured in a layup to give the Sea Gulls a 33-30 halftime advantage.
  • Wilkinson sank a jumper to open the third quarter and boost SU's lead to 35-30. RMC then clocked in the next five, tying the game at 35-35 on a Kagey layup, before a pair of Bull foul shots put Salisbury back up 37-35 at the 7:30 mark.
  • Kagey tied the game again with a jumper, setting off a 14-5 Yellow Jacket surge to end the third. Conrad's buzzer-beating jay gave RMC a 49-42 lead headed into the final period.
  • The fourth quarter proved to be a defensive struggle, with the teams combing for just 15 points over the game's final 10 minutes. With RMC nursing a 51-44 lead inside four minutes to go, Jane Elkins connected on a jumper and Kagey converted a three-point play to make it 56-44.
  • Salisbury never got within single digits again, and the Yellow Jackets wrapped up a 58-48 victory.
