Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

No. 5 Women’s Lacrosse falters against No. 9 William Smith

SPARKS, Md. – The fifth-ranked Salisbury University women's lacrosse team fell to the ninth-ranked William Smith Herons, 12-9, on Saturday afternoon at the USA Lacrosse Complex. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • William Smith got on the board first at the 8:44 mark of the first. Emma Skoglund answered with a goal for the Sea Gulls three minutes later to knot the game at one. 

  • Maddie Schleicher responded with a goal for the Herons with 4:33 left in the first. 

  • Miranda Mears and Caroline Knight closed out the scoring in the first quarter give the Sea Gulls a 3-2 lead heading into the second. 

  • Salisbury opened the second quarter with five unanswered goals to extend its lead out to 7-2 with just under three minutes left in the half. 

  • William Smith answered with a quick 3-0 run at the end of the second quarter to send the teams into halftime with SU leading of 7-5. 

  • The Herons extended their run to 7-0 with four unanswered goals and retook the lead, 9-7, with five minutes left in the third quarter. 

  • Salisbury tied the game back up, 9-9, with goals from Riley Hartman and Skoglund to close out the third quarter. 

  • Two quick goals gave William Smith an 11-9 lead with 11:51 left to play. The Sea Gulls tried to battle back, but a Herons goal in the final minute put the game away and the teams finished with a final score of 12-9. 

SALISBURY GAME NOTES 

  • Kaitlyn Hunsinger earned the start in the net and allowed eight goals with five saves. 

  • Gabriella Dorsey also saw time in net and tallied four saves and allowed four goals. 

WILLIAM SMITH GAME NOTES 

  • Maddie Montgomery had a game-high four goals. 

  • Molly Davis added three goals. 

  • Allie McGinty scored twice. 

  • Maura Smeader tallied 13 saves and allowed nine goals in the net for the win. 

UP NEXT 

  • The Sea Gulls will host second-ranked Tufts on Wednesday, March 22 in a top-five showdown and rematch of the 2021 national championship game, which Salisbury won 14-13. 

  • The opening draw is scheduled for 12 p.m. at Sea Gull Stadium.
